Okay. I only want to unlock my iPhone. With help from google I came across this, http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2008/1...neration-iphone-21-windows-pc-edition-part-2/
I have downloaded everything but the ipsw and that is downloading now. If I do this, I ONLY want to UNLOCK my phone, that it. Is it possible to brick my iPhone permanently? Please help. I am waiting for my new replacement iPhone to come before i do this. I'm running Windows XP and Vista. Also I'm doing this for my Original iPhone, not iPhone 3G.

Thank alot,
Nick O

For the 1st gen iPhone (EDGE, metal back), it's generally agreed that one cannot "brick" it by trying to unlock it. At the very worst, anything one does to it should be open to being undone by putting the iPhone in DFU mode and restoring the firmware with Apple's firmware in this way.

That's not a guarantee. The only way anyone on the internet can give you a guarantee that your iPhone will not be destroyed is if you pay them to do the unlocking on your behalf. But at this point, the experts generally agree that the phone cannot be destroyed by QuickPwn or Pwnage Tool.

Thanks. But when I do it. Can I use T-mobile? Also people say you have to enter info into the network part to get data. How do I do that? Can I use the sidekick pre-paid plan. It allows you to pay $1.00 a day and get unlimited data and texting. Does the phone need Cydia or installer on it to enter the settings for it to work on T-Mobile?

It will work on T-Mobile in the USA. It does not require Cydia or Installer (or being jailbreaked in general) to work on T-Mobile's official data plans. I don't know anything about the Sidekick plan (I'd recommend googling that one), but I do know that it works on other custom data plans like the one for Blackberries (I've never had T-Mobile prepaid service).

The APN you enter depends on the plan you have and other things, so you may have to try a couple, but there are only three or four to try, so the whole process takes maybe three minutes. Per this, it looks like the APN is probably hiptop.t-mobile.com ....

What is an APN? Also so unlocking it will allow me to enter that information?
Also, lets say my iPhone come in the bricked state, you know the connect to iTunes for activation. Will I need to activate it first or will it hactivate it and unlock it?
