Hello!

I would like to Jailbreak & unlock my iphone 3g but I’m a techno novice so have come seeking help.

I’ve been looking at the iClarified guide on how to unlock the iphone 3g but it says you must have a jailbroken iPhone on the 02.28.00 baseband. My iphone is not yet jailbroken and is currently running version 1.1.4 (4A102), with modem firmware: 04.04.05_G.

What is the best way to go about jailbreaking and then unlocking it - shall I restore my iphone, install firmware version 2.2, so I can jailbreak and then unlock using QuickPwn 2.2-1 and Cydia?

Thanks in advance :)

I think it is running 1.1.4 - I bought the phone off of a friend a few months ago (without the orignal SIM) and have literally not used it at all. Been waiting for the software unlock, you see...

What Skil is pointing out is that, by the time the iPhone 3G was initially released, the current firmware revision was 2.0. The iPhone 3G was never sold with 1.1.4... and I don't know of any documented method to force it down to 1.1.4. So if you have 1.1.4 running on a 3G iPhone, you're quite the trickster.

Anyway, basically, you just update the firmware using iTunes, and then follow the jailbreak / unlock process.

Gotcha! Cheers!!

But really, going through settings>general>about on the iphone, it says version: 1.1.4

Nice...

Just use the Pwnage tool to create an unlocked 2.2 firmware and unlock it. Once you unlock it once, it should remain unlocked even if you update its firmware directly from iTunes (so far, Apple has not changed the iPhone with EDGE baseband since 2.0, and so it stays unlocked).

If that image worked, the one that's all black (or one that looks like it but is all white) would be 3G; the silver and metal one is EDGE.

Well, I bought the phone for £90. He didn't acutally say it was an iphone 3g tbh, i just assumed it was - my ignorance ya see...

£90 for an iPhone 2G still isn't bad, is it in good nick? Recently you've been lucky to get a 2G on the right side of £200; though I'm sure that's destined to change with the release of yellowsn0w.

A happy new year to you to!

yep, I would grade it at around 7.5-8/10.

Now I'm thinking about selling this to buy a 3g iphone - but I'd better hurry, eh?

Hmmmmmmmmm...decisions, decisions...

You have a great phone now. Be happy with it! Unlock it, try it out, and if you feel you need (or can afford, what with the data caps over there) 3G service, get it. I've had my iPhone since launch day in 2007 and I've never had even phone service with it. You'd be surprised how many open Wi-Fi spots you can find... I don't even notice that I don't have a data plan.

haha, you're right, i should try it out first! Can I still get all the cool apps for the 2g too?

Yes, essentially every app works on the EDGE iPhone, once you update to more recent firmware. I love mine also.

Plus right now, the market for 3G iPhones (outside of buying one directly on contract) is still very limited. There was no point, also, since few people were willing to go to the trouble of a Turbo SIM to unlock it. They should get more available, hopefully, now that yellowsn0w is available.

Might as well enjoy yours in the meantime. I get so much out of mine. :)

Even though I've just managed to unlock my 3G; it's been sitting in it's box since I bought it in the US way back in August last year, I've just put my SIM back in my 2G for the time being. I don't know what it is about the 2G that draws me to it but I definitely agree with Tallest Skil in that you should give it a go and see how you like it before going out and spending over £300 on a brand new 3G.

Once you start browsing the App Store and seeing apps that you can use on a daily basis you'll never look back, and even if you're not using apps then you've still got the internet, email and ipod functions, plus the fact it's still a phone at the end of the day ;)
