unlocking iPhone 3G so I can sell to family in Europe...how?

If I want to sell my iPhone to family in Europe do I have to unlock it or can they do it?

I am still under contract, but I am buying the new 3G S

You'll have to check the bootloader to make sure it isn't 5.09 (currently unlockable). I think its a common courtesy to unlock the phone for them (if you advertised it as such), but they could do it just as easily.

how do i check the boot loader version
