Bell should unlock the phone for $50 once the contract is finished.

Do I have to wait until my contract ends?? Can I not just to a third party vendor to get it done? Ive spoken to Bell and they tell me they don't do it.

Yes, what's the point of unlocking since you're in a contract? You can buy your way out of the contract or sell the phone with the remaining contract and buy an unlocked iPhone 4S from Apple.

Rogers policy on Unlocking
To have a device unlocked, a customer must:

Have an account in good standing
Have paid the un-subsidized / no term cost for the device at least 30 days prior OR have finished their Commitment Period (contract)
Unlock a device which is listed in their equipment history (no grey market devices)
Pay a $50 unlocking fee plus applicable taxes (note: prepaid customers must have a $50 plus the applicable taxes, balance on their account)

I am travelling for new years and want to avoid all of the roaming charges. It doesn't make sense that you can get it done but NOT from Bell.

Make sure you turn off your 3G or you'll get a nasty bill from Bell when you get back.

Your best bet might be just leaving your phone here and get a pay as you go phone when you travel. OR take an iPad 3G (they're all unlocked) and use AcroBits and a headset for a makeshift phone (this is what I do).

Yep

Winnipeg Student Gets $18,000 iPhone Data Bill: Ouch

…the precise amount on the Rogers bill — $17,913.14 — was closer to $18,000. And the full amount was due on Sept. 20, which, just to upsize the pain, happens to be his 18th birthday.

He said it happened in July, while he was out of the country on vacation.

He and a friend spent two weeks in New York City, checking out jazz bars, but judging by the bill he got in August, most of the damage was done while he was visiting his mother’s family in Trinidad.

Our cell providers and system and rates SUCK. Ok I said it. Haha I have an iPad but only wifi...and its more about portability and apps while I am vacationing...in addition to booze.

I guess I will manage

Vancouverite Alanna Fero went to Egypt for two weeks with her iPhone. Prior to leaving, Fero says she spoke with Telus to ensure she was on the right plan. When she got home, she was shocked to receive a monthly bill of $37,694.53.
