IF I do decide to upgrade to a 3G I'm going to still hang on to my 2G, but I'll want to unlock it, of course.

Here is my question:

Do I unlock it before or after I activate the 3G phone and cancel the contract on the 2G?

It doesnt really matter when you unlock it. But i would recommend after you activate your iPhone 3G.

I unlocked my iPhone (1st Gen) when I received the phone strictly because I use T-Mobile, but I suggest that you wait until the 3G iPhone. Many people dislike ZiPhone as their unlock method because of the change of baseband, but I suggest the application because it is quick and simple to do.
Enjoy your future unlocked iPhone and the many free applications it comes with :)
