Hi all,

I've got an 8 gig iPhone that I unlocked using pwnage. My sister just bought a 1st generation 4 gig and wants me to unlock it but I'm having problems. The iPhone is running 2.1 firmware but when I go into pwnage and select the firmware (2.1) it says wrong firmware selected. So I tried to just put the iPhone in DFU mode and put my custom firmware on the phone but I got an unknown error in iTunes. What am I doing wrong? Can I unlock it with something else (I don't wanna use ZiPhone)

Thanks in advance

Are you using PwangeTool or QuickPwn ?

Go to this website, you can find more info that may help you. You can also download QuickPwn which is a lot easier to use.

I'm sure that I'm doing it right. I unlocked my own phone using pwnage. And I just tried to use quickpwn and everything worked until I went to restore the phone in iTunes. I get a message from itunes that says "could not restore iphone"

When you say "unlock", do you mean Jailbreak as well as SIM-unlock the iPhone to where it works on ANY carrier??

Thanks!!

P.S. Is WinPwn going to be updated soon to where it can Jailbreak 2.1?

Thanks again! :)

It has already been updated. They released Pwnapple I believe two days ago, you can get it here.

Are you trying to restore in recovery (DFU) mode or normal?

I'm not concerned about jailbreaking, just unlocking.

And I am trying to restore in DFU mode.

Oh man, that's for the 2G iPhone. Is an easy method available for the 3G model? I like WinPwn (2.5 it was for 2.0.x versions). Awesome how it takes you step by step through the whole process! Those dudes know what they're doing.

Help an uninformed nitwit, please?? You are my rockstar, baby! :apple:

I have the same phone as your sister's. I was finally successful after I set the table by doing a plain vanilla Restore to stock 2.0.2. Then following the usual instructions, I was able to successfully upload Pwnage's custom 2.1 build; 1600 and 2001 errors no more. The difference between our situations: Your currently at 2.1 and I was currently at something-prior-to 2.0. Anyhow, I don't think you can DFU a pwned 2.1 build into an iPhone that has stock 2.1. Think about downgrading first.

Check out the last post in my brain-dump thread where I try to list all the variables as they were in my successful attempt.

I dunno what to do. I keep getting the unknown error when I go to restore to the custom firmware. I downgraded it to 2.0.2 as suggestion, then I used pwnage tool to build the custom firmware and I get all the way into iTunes but then I get an unknown error after it tries to install the custom firmware.

FWIW: When the 2.1 pwned build went in smoothly for me, it was with Mac OS 10.5.5 and iTunes 8.0. You should probably trash all existing Pwnage builds, updrade iTunes and OS, then rebuild a new Pwnage firmware, then see if iTunes will send it thru to iPhone.
