I don't want to install any applications, I just want to be able to unlock my iPhone 3G for use abroad. Do I need to jailbreak or can it be unlocked only?

What about these unlock SIM cards vs. a software unlock?

I'm using MobileMe to sync my iPhone with a Mac and a PC. How does unlocking and jailbreaking affect the stability and function of such syncing?

When using a US unlocked iPhone abroad (I'm going to Sweden and Germany), with a local carrier's SIM card, will everything work normally or will some services or functions not be available (like visual voice mail, push etc.)?

What is the easiest way to unlock my iPhone temporarily while abroad, that won't affect it's functionality and stability much?

I'm thinking about upgrading to 3GS before I go. Will this make an unlock more difficult?

Thanks,
Doc

to answer your last question unlocking the 3GS will be the same as unlocking the 3G just dont upgrade to 3.1 or else you wont be able to unlock period being as your baseband will be upgraded.

not sure about mobile me though never used mobile me
i have only unlocked once and that was a software unlock which required jailbreaking. if that is all your doing it shouldnt effect the stability of the phone.

You won't get VVM with a local SIM, but otherwise the phone will work as normal if you unlock it with UltraSn0w. It's easy and free. You'll need to get a SIM that includes a data add-on to use internet, or stick to using wi-fi spots in hotels etc.

In a nutshell:
- jailbreal with RedSn0w
- unlock withUltraSn0w

Regarding MobileMe, I don't know but I think there are lots of posts about that on this forum.

iClarified has lots of tutorials to help you with the process:
