it can be unlocked, my co-worker has one he is using on T-mobile, now as far as i know it was unlocked with sim card hack, but not through the software.

Ok so I am looking to buy an original, unlocked iPhone. I've been browsing eBay the past couple of days and will be making a purchase shortly. However, amongst the original iPhones for sale on eBay, there are dozens upon dozens of 3Gs. Most of these claim to have been unlocked, and can be used with any SIM. Now, I was under the impression that because the phone is activated in store, this simply isn't possible. I've done some searching here and other parts of the internet, and get mixed results. Sometimes I read that the 3G is simply unable to be unlocked, while other times it says that you can easily use the SIM of your choice.

Anybody want to give me a concrete answer? And if the iPhone 3G can be unlocked, is it safe to buy one off eBay? If not, I'm just going to go for an original iPhone.

Depends because APPLE does sell unlocked iphones to certain countries. You have to findout where they are coming from.

If you arepurchasing domestically then i know for a fact that it has to be activated in store.

Yeah there are official Unlocked iPhone 3Gs in Belgium, Italy, etc. and there's the Rebel Sim Card that bypasses the sim lock in store locked phones.
