So I might be getting an iPhone 3G and I wanted to know, if I unlock it will all of the functions still work... I know 3G won't but everything else will? Thanks.

Yes.... everything will work (even 3G) as long as the network you are using supports it and your sim card allows the use of data.
Things like picture messaging and visual voice mail are also contract and network dependent.
Otherwise, everything else should work.

(I understand that only AT&T have 3G in the States but the phone will work using Edge on Verizon, for example).

Edit: I've been told its T-Mobile not Verizon that uses Edge, and Verizon won't work at all.

Verizon isn't GSM...did you mean T-Mobile? Verizon only operates a CDMA2000 network.

I think I did, thanks! I could remember my unlocked phone working fully on AT&T during my last visit, but only got slower data on the other. That one must have been T-Mobile then.

What I was saying is still true... whether your iPhone works (as a phone or connection to wireless data) or not depends on your network. The rest of its functions will work without problem after being unlocked.

Sure! Unlocking only adds the ability for you to choose your GSM network for which to use your iPhone on, it doesn't take any functionality away. :)

Now lets say I get the iPhone 2G and I unlock it. Is there a way to get an iPhone 3G looking back to put on it and can I Tether with it?
