Since upgrading to iOS 14 my mail badge count and/or new emails don’t always tally.

EG when I open Mail it may say I have a new unread mail when I don’t. A few refreshes or force close of mail fixes the issue.

Irritating.

I saw your reply in the other thread and thought I'd post here.

I have this same issue and I think I've somewhat narrowed down the cause, at least for me. In iOS13 I had Mail set up for 3 accounts (iCloud, Gmail and an outlook.com account). Once I upgraded to iOS 14 I started seeing this issue (50... or 60 unread emails badge when there were no new emails).

I removed my Gmail and outlook.com accounts, leaving only my iCloud account in Mail and this issue disappeared. I added the Gmail and outlook accounts back and the issue returned within an hour or two.

At some point I may test with only one additional account and see if it's specific to my outlook or gmail accounts but for now I just have iCloud for Mail and it's working fine.

I don’t have outlook or gmail and I still have the problem. The only difference is my count isn’t out by 50-60 it’s just out by 1 or 2. However, it’s still the same issue.

Grrrr!

I have the EXACT same issue and noticed it day 1 ... thinking I'm going crazy.

Mail app
- only email app on my iPhone
- only 1 account (iCloud)
- multiple folders within.
- 3 alias (only 2 come to my iCloud account the other will be deleted as it's not used)
> 1 alas created today and tested successfully goes to only 1 folder (setup in iCloud > Mail > Preferences online; not in iPhone).
> the other alias works as intended and emails arrive to Inbox.
- MAIL is set for Unread Badge Count for Inbox only and has since iOS 5.
- Several folders show an unread count, when I open up the folder no unread emails. I even select the Unread filter within iOS and still no unread emails. These are folders either I have rules setup to move emails into OR that I manually move emails into (either or or both). I navigate back to the root folder list and the unread count is gone.

VERY frustrating and potentially time consuming.

I have the same issue since upgrading to iOS 14. Some of my email folders now showing Unread message counts even though I do not have unread emails in those folders. Issue comes and goes, not always present.

Has the option for inbox only notifications been removed? I don’t see it anymore.

Just had a look and you’re right some options are missing in terms of badge count! These are the settings I have

This has been going on since iOS13.

I’ve not noticed this ever happening before in any previous iOS implementation. And I’ve previously used multiple accounts on exchange or Apple DEP devices at work which I’ve supported since iOS 5 or with other Mail apps that support exchange active sync or imap/pop or O365 or a combo of all. On my current iPhone 8 for 2yrs+ now just 1 account (iCloud) and using only Mail.

I have the same issue as well! Mail count at times would show that I have 200+ emails but (which is shocking to my use case) but when I open it there would only be 10-15 new unread emails. I do have multiple accounts (iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, and Live) so I may try leaving just the iCloud account on as suggested above. Very annoying!

I noticed this for the first time yesterday (December 15th). I'm still on 14.2 on my iPad and iPhone. Both devices plus online iCloud Mail show the same number of unread messages (16 as I write). My iMac correctly shows zero unread messages. The erroneous unread message count is always for the iCloud mail account.

Very annoying.

😢 I'll post again if it comes back for me. Now the iPhone icon badge changes instantly even if I mark an email message as read on my iMac.

Frustrating as I just noticed I have a duplicate folder where my Apple Email notifications and receipts go into.
Somehow iCloud duplicated the original ‘Apple Receipts’ folder and on it’s own wild choice split previous emails into both and routed new emails into the newer folder. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I moved ALL into the new folder, considering iCloud Mail Rule (online, nothing local with my rules), is routing newer emails into it, then deleted the old folder. 4 days in, so far so good, no more strange folder updates since I ditched the MBP 3mths ago and got an iPad Pro late last month.

PS: and as stated before I’ve had NO local mail rules on any Apple device and not linked to 3rd party email apps/services.
