Just wondering if there's been any obscure updates for the original UT for Mac out there. And wine-wrapped/virtualized Windows UT versions are not what I mean - my main computer is a dual G5 tower.

At the moment I've got the ~10 year old "Preview 3" of the OS X realease, PowerPC only, and some bugs, like no music, grenade smoke shows up as big black squares, networking issues, a few other bits and pieces, and so on.

Have you considered UT2003 or UT2004? I believe these run on Leopard (your sig) and are both quite excellent. It's been a while, but I think there are patches for them.

Yeah but UT99 is the king the others just did not match up IMHO. I suspect the source code has been opened up enough to work on a Mac port using the original source.

I am NOT volunteering to do this just pointing out that all hope of a decent re-port not gone.

Actually I liked them all. Each had unique and cool maps. The later versions had more game modes. The mapping community was outstanding! :)

Wow, good find

Yeah it's amazing especially for UT2004 how many huge map packs there were, amazing stuff..

Yeah OP, I would love to have a port for OS X that actually works. But, given the age of the game and the era of computing hardware/software it was developed, I doubt it will ever happen. I'm still in a clan that supports a game server running UT. We still play this version of UT, the others became too much eye candy. The scale of player to map on later releases was not accurate. Something about UT 99, IMO, it is the best FPS with respect to map selection, weapons, skins, types of gameplay and voice packs. The UT community is incredible, I have 7 CDs maxed out with maps, skins, textures and voice packs. My UT folde on my computer is pushing 3GBs in size. Takes a while to open game.

I'm just hoping that something happens similar to Quake 1/2/3, as in Epic actually release the source code for the engine and people really go to town on it upgrading it, making it faster... Plenty of great Quake 1 engines out there that are still being developed.

Me and a few friends made a cell shaded version of Quake 2 while in our final year at university for fun, it also had bullet time multiplayer which was kinda cool and weird at the same time.

You can do loads with these old engines if you have the patience to push through some very old code. Pure C is far from fun and games but the comments are usually good value :)

LOL.

If the Quake death quotes and the Q2 "crakhor" model is anything to go by, I'm intrigued. Must download :)

I recall a line saying something like "don't try and work out how these three lines of mathematical code work just take it for granted this is a super fast back face cull" or similar.

As I recall it was a very clever if crazy bit of maths.
