Hello all,

Ever since upgrading to iOS 9, my 5s has been largely unresponsive to touch input after turning the screen on. Also, rather than a smooth fade-in from black, it is very jumpy as the screen brightness comes up. It usually takes around 4 screen on/off cyles before I can actually get into the phone. However, once I plug the phone in, there is no issue at all. Everything seems to work flawlessly again.

This issue has been occurring since iOS 9.0 and through 9.0.1, 9.0.2, 9.1.0, and now all three beta builds of 9.2. I joined the beta program after 9.1 hoping that a fix would be pushed through on the beta builds but to no avail.

I appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks

David

Have you tried resetting all settings to see if that might make a difference? Perhaps even restoring as new?

I should add that I have reset the iPhone and restored from backup (both from iTunes and iCloud) multiple times. But no, I have not tried setting the phone up as a "new" phone.

I did end up trying a hard reset after that, Livingspring, but it didn't get me anywhere.

I also just reset the iPhone and set up as new - but still no luck. It still has the same lock-screen issue even when set up as a new device.

One thing I forgot to mention was that it also gives me a "No SIM card" alert from time to time - usually during times of heavy lag when using the phone. This also only began since updating to iOS9.

It seems like you may have a partial hardware failure, couple that with the choke iOS 9 does put on older devices, it could be exposing it further. It may be worth it to take it to a Genius Bar and see what they say.

I can try that this coming week. Do you think they'll have much they can do for me given the phone is 1 year 3 months old?

I always go in figuring I will have to pay since I'm out of warranty and they always surprise me and just take care of it. I would ask them to run a diagnostic and see if they have anything to add. My wife's 5S was acting up on 8.0.0. We asked them to look at it. The diagnostics revealed a ton of kernel panics. They recommended to update first as there were plenty of fixes she had not installed. This was before iOS 9.

In and out in 15 minutes and with good information. Perhaps they can tell you something similar. It can't hurt to ask. I would suggest to make an appointment prior though. It's not a guarantee but it helps. Don't forget to check in when you arrive.

Good luck.

Thanks.

I managed to get to the Apple Store this weekend but had no luck. The tech ran a couple diagnostic tests (I only saw him run a multitouch test) then told me it was "an inconvenience" that I would just have to deal with - or swap out the phone with a refurb 5s for $260. I don't think I'll be doing that.

So I'm still not sure what to do. I think my only option is to wait for future updates, hoping that one comes along to fix the issue.

David.

Wow. That's shocking. They never even said what the cause was, inconvenience or not.

Well he basically told me the root cause was updating to iOS 9. He said when there is a large update it is always best to wait until at least the next small update. This is not something I feel I should have to do with Apple products. I've had android phones in the past and can wholeheartedly agree with that - but not with Apple. I just expect their products to work.

Not only that, but the subsequent small iOS 9 updates did nothing to remedy the issue. I even jumped on the beta program to have future updates delivered a little quicker - even if other bugs came along with it.

Since I turned down the $260 replacement cost and the ~$150 trade in value of this phone (he wasn't sure exactly), I was told to hope that either a future update fixes the problem or to "wait for my upgrade."

I thought I would post a quick video of what I talking about at this point. This is actually a pretty quick unlock - often times it takes two or three sleep/wake cycles.

That has actually happened on my 6s too. I've tried many settings but it seems to go away on its own after a few days. Usually it occurs after I've just updated my OS. I'm wondering if this is just a minor issue with iOS 9.

Was yours an OTA or clean install? My updates were all OTA.

Holy
Moly. That's bad. I am still a little stunned he said that. I agree with you as well. You should be able to just update. I always do.

Curious, why start swiping before the screen was on (at least it looked like that was the case a few times)?

Usually the home button lights up the screen immediately (at least on other properly functioning iPhones I've used) so you're safe to start swiping immediately. In this quick video it didn't respond to the first button press so I pressed it again. On the second button press, the screen was just actually lit - just not completely. It just didn't show up on my tablet at first. It won't really fade in from black smoothly anymore.

It was originally an OTA update. It would be nice if it would go away after a few days! I know what you're talking about with that though - I've had it in the past. Something about the OS still indexing after the update.
