Can anybody recommend a reputable, informative and yet simplistic site that explains how I can effect an untethered jailbreak on my iPhone 3GS 4.2.1 using Windows Xp. Any suggestions gratefully received as it appears to be a bit of a minefield of differing advice out there ! Apologies if this is an oft repeated question but my iphone, in its stock guise is driving me mad !!

Just because the iPhone 3GS is from week 34 doesn't mean it's the old bootrom. To figure out what bootrom you have do this: http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-check-iphone-3gs-bootrom-iboot-version/

Then jailbreak with Redsn0w

Thanks , I'll check that
Just followed the instructions given by your link, and guess what I was completely wrong and in fact have the new bootrom. So could I repeat my first question only exchanging the age of the bootrom! I've also been told about "jailbreak-any-iphone .com - are they an option ?

Jailbreaks are usually pretty simple for people that know something about computers. Most developers make it simple to use a jailbreak program. If someone or some website wants to charge you, they are just taking advantage of you. However, if you feel more comfortable letting someone else do it, no one else can stop you. But, I hope you recognize the difference between a true jailbroken phone & someone telling you that your phone is jailbroken.
