Unusual battery drainage and warming up after updating to macOS Sierra

I updated to Sierra about 3 days ago I've started to notice my battery draining extremely fast and the fan turning on during times where it never has before. Even just sitting in class taking notes on my computer with nothing else running will now drain my battery and make my fan kick on extremely loudly. I had my battery up to 80% and this only lasted an hour for my class. I have checked to see if any apps are using significant energy and it says there aren't any. If anyone has suggestions i would appreciate it.

Does the battery status menu tell you any apps are using significant energy? Also, check if any processes are using resources in Activity Monitor.

I've noticed longer battery life in Sierra.

I am having the same problem, my MacBook air was fine until I updated to sierra. but my battery on menu bar says that Mail is using significant battery.

I downloaded Sierra yesterday and my macbook pro has been running hot since then. The fan is often on and I've never even heard the fan before this. Is this likely to continue? It's been plugged in so I haven't noticed battery life. I guess I need to check that now.

"Plugged in" + "photo apps close" will trigger the photo library scan after upgrade to Sierra.

You can check the activity monitor to see if that's the reason why you have a hot / and noisy MBP. The scanning may cost up to few days depends on how large your photo library is.

If that's the case, you shouldn't see any battery drop because the scan only process when plugged in.

Mine has been Messages.app, and I'm told its due to the built in previews of content now, and that the sandboxing for QuickTime that it uses is poorly optimized.

I met the same problem. Upgraded from Mavericks to Sierra. The battery previously can last more than 8 hours, now less than 3 hours.

Any solution now? anyone downgrades MacOS?

I finally took my Macbook into the Apple store genius bar and a file from an old anti virus program I had installed was causing the computer to run hot. Since that was uninstalled the computer has been fine. The battery life is back to normal and the fan hasn't been on.
