unwanted automatic download of Sierra on ElCap

Yesterday I seemed to have stopped an unwanted automatic download of the Sierra Installer dmg in the background of my Capitan OS. There is now a 3< GB dmg in my user library. Why does ElCap automatically do this even though AppStore was not open and can I delete this dmg without harming my OS?

Perhaps because you set it so in App Store Preferences?

Yes, you can safely remove the dmg.

Yes, it was the first point under "Automatically..." I unticked it.
