Up to 16GB of RAM? or No?

I keep reading conflicting reports... Apple's website says:

Memory
4GB (two 2GB) of 1333MHz DDR3 memory
Configurable to 16GB

for all of them. I plan on purchasing the low end 21.5" model, because not only is it all I can afford, but, it will undoubtedly be a huge upgrade for me coming from a 6 year old iMac.

but... i dont know how much RAM i will be able to put into it? i was gonna buy my own RAM and install it myself. I want more than 4GB.

ive read in a few threads that the low end 21.5" model wont take 16GB of RAM... then how much?

You are right, it wont take 16 gigs, it will take 32 gigs. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2010/DDR3_21.5_27

Order it now, buy 8 gigs (2 x 4) aftermarket for $100 and have 12 gigs total. getting 16 gigs aftermarket isnt cost effective.

im asking because even tho apples site says that, several people on here have commented that it was an error and the base 21.5" model will not accept 16GB of RAM and that it was a typo on apples site.

The specs that Apple lists on their site for this generation are less detailed than in previous years. They do not explicitly state anywhere on their retail web the number of SO-DIMM slots that the 21.5" has -- and the inability to configure it with 4x RAM chips in their online store is befuddling. Thankfully the manual cleared the issue up.

They also do not list anywhere that the system has a Kensington lock slot -- but per the manual, it does.

Newer iMacs support 16GB of RAM, Apple probably thinks people spending $1200-1500 aren't going to spend 40-50%+ of the total price on RAM. You can, of course buy 16 GBs third-party for ~$200, whereas it would cost $800 from Apple.

I don't know whether all models can unofficially support 32GB (previously it was only the 27" Core i5 and i7 models). Price needs to come down a lot for 8 GB chips to make them cost-effective.
