I just passed an iPhone 2G onto a poorer friend of mine that has wanted an iPhone for some time, but can't really afford one. I figured a free iPhone is a good place to get her started. :D

Now, at&t is quite expensive (more than she can afford) when using an iPhone due to all the extras. T-Mobile might be a different story though.

Can anyone recommend a method of making the iPhone's data features working on T-Mobile for usage such as Safari/Email/Facebook (no Youtube or streaming music) for ~$10 per month?

I would also like to hear about anyone's recommendations on minutes too if possible. I'm not a T-Mobile user and most of the information I've read is a few years old now.

Thank you in advance for any help!

You will probably have to get the internet plan, which is definitely more than $10.

Edit: I believe $24.99 if added to a plan.

Not true! As of July 3rd they changed data plan coverage to $10 but it doesn't include texting or messages such as emails, supposably but I've been receiving emails off the chain. And youd still be able to use youtube and stuff no problem, ive been using mine on their edge, also word has it that tmobile is coming out with a 2100 MHz 3G network sometime in 2009 after they won an auction for a series of networks running on 2100 MHz :). Oh and Texting you'd have to add that to your pLan seperately

Tell her to buy a sim card on eBay (at T-Mobile store it's $20 + Tax). I bought mine for $7 shipped and activated with no problems. As for plan tell her to get the FlexPay MyFavs Monthly with 300/600 Minutes for $40/$50 depending on her needs. The $50 one comes with 600 Minutes, 5 MyFavs Contacts and Unlimited Mobile to Mobile. I use WiFi for internet and texting so i save $$$ rather than paying for texting and EDGE and i pay $48.49 with taxes every month. No suprise bills, no contract and u can give T-Mobile the iPhone ESN with no worries. Best Value and carrier no question about it.

EDGE with 3.0 update?

Hey,

So I am running 3.0 unlocked with Pwnage, and I can't figure out how to get my EDGE working again on t-mobile. I can't find a package on Cydia or Ivy, and I did the epc.tmobile.com...I seem to remember sshing in last time with a proxy.pac file...do I need to do that again? Or something about a voicestream address...if anyone can shed some light I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

UPDATE: OK So I can load nytimes.com, but weather is not updating. and it seems way slower than before. I am using epc.tmobile.com. Any suggestions?

Cheapest plan is $100/yr for 1000minutes no data.

With data your best bet is $1 day for unlimited data and text, minutes are 15 cents each extra.

i think you should try internet2.voicestream.com that one works for a faster internet. other than that, i suggest calling tmobile, say "PDA" and then tell the first person that you have an iphone and they transfer you to their iphone department and from there they can trouble shoot you. They might just refresh your data connection or whatever it is that they call it.

anyways to the OP
I pay $75 for 300 minutes unlimited data and text. I think you could get the $10 web2go internet theres some sort of hack or something to be able to use that as regular internet but i'm not sure how that works, i just have the $24.99 plan. My same plan for AT&T (except its 450 minutes) is over $100 !!! they're crazy! no way i'm getting AT&T
