So, I got these little babys today and have been playin' around with them for a bit. Works like charm, seamless between my iPhone 12 PM, Apple TV 4K (gen 6 - latest), Mac Mini M1 and my 2020 iPad Pro 12,9" without any hassle.
Well, one thing, when starting the sound of some sort on my Mac Mini M1 I strangely have to disconnect the AirPods Max in the Bluetooth menu and reconnect, then the sound "arrives". That's a minor flaw.

My question is rather how do I manually update the firmware of these?

I'm on 3C39, and the newest AirPods Max firmware version is 3E756 I read a bit here and there, released this summer i think. But I can't find anywhere to upgrade FW. Where is that "button" hidden?

Just listen to a couple of seconds of music on your phone, then pause and set the phone and headphones down for a few minutes without turning them off. They will update on their own.

Yes, thanks I've tried this two times now. Nothing happens. How do I manually update the Firmware?

E: The first time I waited approx. 5 minutes, the second time around 30 minutes. Same procedure. Start listen to YouTube music for a minute or two. Pause the player, put the headphones down and just let it be near/beside my phone and forget about it.

Is this a faulty device? There must be some way to manually force them to update?

Unfortunately there is no "Update" button. It is done in the background when inactive.

For more info I recommend a read through of this MR article.

There's no way to manually update with a button. It's all supposed to happen in the background. Put them away for a while, they will not update under usage. It's a bit frustrating if you really need the update to fix a bug (the battery drain on the Max's for instance).

Short answer is - you don’t. Sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn’t.
Personally I walked seven circles around them widdershins, under a full moon, while chanting to invoke the Apple Gods of yore.

Didn’t work though. I think Atkinson, Jobs and the rest have had their pictures taken down, replaced with an Image of Jony Ive, tended to by designers, really thin and all dressed in lilac.
Of course, Tim Cook has a private shrine venerating Warren Buffet.

Cultivate patience. The update will come to you. Eventually.
