Ok, got my wife's 3GS updated, going through the steps on the phone now. I entered in her Apple ID on the "Apple ID" screen. The next screen says "Update Apple ID" and asks for an apple ID ("For your security, your Apple ID login must be an email address"). If I enter in her Apple ID email (the same one I entered on the previous screen), it gives me an error: "This Apple ID is already being used. If this is your account, reset a forgotten password at iforgot.apple.com". What's the deal? Do I have to set up a new Apple account? Why?

Figured it out. Her Apple ID was just an ID name. Because of iCloud and iMessages and Facetime, it now has to be an email address. As soon as I entered her email address, the authentication in iTunes broke until I updated the Apple ID field with the new email address.
