The same guy who leaked a video of the alleged Apple Pencil 3 today also has a tweet about the iMac. He says something like "it gets new colors, and a 32" version" and he also shows two screenshots of what could be the iMac introduction video. I know that the Pencil video can be fake, but these screenshots look unlike any mockup I've seen so far. It looks like it's straight out of an official Apple video. I couldn't find any other similar pictures with reverse image search and I didn't see it being mentioned anywhere.
If he is right, the next iMac would borrow a lot of the XDR design:
- Same stand, but without the fancy mechanism = not height adjustable, no rotation (=lower costs)
- Looks like it would look identical to the XDR when viewed from the front
- the ports are not shown on the pictures, however, this would match the previous generations where the ports are located on the left side of the back
- a new, sophisticated cooling mechanism (I suspect that the huge holes on the sides are intake vents for air, which would make that mechanism very powerful [the air would exit through the back])
- a much smaller than on previous iMacs (the logo on the XDR is also extremely small, so it would also fit)
- 4 speakers (the iMac Pro had 2)
- Space Grey color (which is in line with "more colors")
- the round button right in the lower middle of the back could be the power button.
So all in all: simplified XDR design + iMac Pro like cooling solution = great (but long overdue) redesign. Would also fit with Mark Gurman's statement that there won't be "anything particularly innovative".
Maybe we see it on Tuesday - although it seems unlikely, it could be a great story which Apple could tell: "now you've seen the power of the A14X in the new iPad Pro, let us show you what it could do in a Mac, because what we did with the A14 to A14X we also made with the M1. Let's have a look at the new iMac." Would fit quite well, the iMac would also get all the attention of the press now, and the WWDC would be the date where the new 14/16" MacBook Pros could shine.
It could also very well be the new Apple Display and not the new iMac, but I would rule that out because the news that Apple has started early development of a lower priced monitor is just 3 months old. Although the cooling solution is a step down from the XDR, I would say it's too capable for a "simple, lower priced monitor", but I could be wrong (and also the source on the news could be too).
I think it's highly likely that this is the new iMac, and if these are screenshots of the introduction video, that means that such a video already exists in Cupertino, which gives me a bit of hope that we could see the new iMac on Tuesday.
What do you think?
