Update Gmail contacts from iPhone via Exchange?

So, I'm playing around with Gmail syncing vs my MobileMe stuff. I have contacts on my iPad that I want to get to Gmail. I setup my Gmail account via Exchange and set contacts to sync through the Gmail account. I assumed the iPad would update my Gmail contacts automatically like it did with MobileMe. So far, nothing.

Am I missing something?

So, if you add or edit a contact on your iPad, you see it in Google contacts?

Yes.

Make sure that in the Contacts app, you're looking at the right group of contacts. (Tap the "Groups" ribbon in the upper left, and choose the correct group for your Gmail account.)
