Hey Guys,
I thought I update you regarding my experience with my Seagate HDD replacement at my local Apple Store.
Just to refresh you, I had purchased the Mid 2010 i7 iMac about 2 weeks ago and immediately noted that I had the awful loud Seagate 1 TB HDD. It was pretty bad. So I brought it back to the Apple Store where I had purchased it and requested for a replacement HDD since I had a perfect screen. (I had previously been refunded my money after going through 4 Early 2010 i7s with yellow screens.) I left my iMac there since last Saturday and the Genius who I worked with ordered me 2 drives to increase the likelihood of getting the more quiet WD version since even he admitted the Seagates were loud.
Today I got the call to come get my iMac. I got to the store and one of the Sales reps brought out my computer. I immediately noticed 2 big nicks on the aluminum bezel at the lower left corner and on the stand
! I immediately asked to speak with the store manager and told her that I bought in my iMac in pristine condition and now have one that is dinged and scratched. I told her that was not acceptable. She told me that Apple doesn't take images of the exterior of the computers they service but that she "would take my word on it." I was offered a replacement i7 immediately. I did fire up my old iMac before they got out the new one and the replacement was again a Seagate
! But that didn't matter since I would be taking home a spanking new one.
Well, I am at home now and I have to say that my 2nd iMac is much quieter despite the fact that it's also the Seagate HDD!!! I couldn't believe it
. Both were from the same week of production (30th week) and both were Made in the USA with "QP" serial numbers. I will say that this Seagate HDD is not completely quiet but rather sounds like somebody has placed it in a rubber enclosure making it much, much quieter. It is on par with one of my returned Early 2010 units that had the WD drive. And the screen on the unit is perfect as well
! That should put people at ease in terms of getting a quality unit...at least in terms of a good screen.
In conclusion, I am satisfied. It's a shame that I had to go through this much hassle to remedy my complaint. But it all worked out in the end. What's got me wondering is that there seems to be quite a bit of variation in terms of Seagate HDD noise level. I've noted that from the 3 Early 2010 units I returned as well. Geez, it's all luck of the draw I guess.
Thanks for reading this far. I am sorry for the long winded post. But I really wanted to share my experience with those of you who are in my situation.
