so i learned my lesson, just got the bill. EDGE was horribly slow and i used it maybe 2 days in Mexico. I was charged under DATA ROAM usage and my bill is now $350. In some cases, i was charged $42.00 for about 2,100kB. I cant believe it was so much and soooo horribly slow. Oh well, lesson learned, i'll be more carefl from now on:eek:

Now you know why this man is the world's richest man.

Does anyone know how to check voicemail in Mexico WITHOUT using EDGE?

I don't think it's possible to check your voicemail without EDGE access (unless maybe through wifi?).

I have a co-worker with an iPhone who is currently in Tahiti. He had to cancel his data plan for the duration of the trip in order to avoid the exorbitant international data charges (at least this is what at&t told him to do). Since there is no way to disable any of the internal functions on the phone that may access the EDGE network to check for updates and do other background tasks.

He did mention that he was not able to access his voicemail once the data plan was discontinued, I don't know if he found a work around or not.

And you know what is the worst thing? Most people here in Mexico are happy because we have the richest person in the world. How ironic, a country where 30-40% of the people live in poverty has the richest person in the world.

Sometimes I really just want to go somewhere else and leave Mexico for good, it's so depressing to see how a country is being robbed by corrupt politicians.

And, umm... what country would you go to where that doesn't happen?

I've learned quickly (much in the same way) that one's national phone plan often gets really expensive when they try using the phone in another nation.

I am not talking only about phone rates. I am talking about corruption within the government.

And it doesn't means that the other countries don't have corruption, but only a few are as bad as Mexico.

I was talking about the government corruption as well. Although Mexico is awful, it still isn't the worst IMO. That, once again IMO, would either go to somewhere in Africa, such as Zimbabwe, somewhere in Asia such as China, somewhere in the Middle East such as Suadi Arabia or somewhere in South America such as Venezuela or of course the US of A, home of Enron.

So once again I ask with much sarcasm, where would you like to live?

the grass is always greener on the other side...

possibly a stupid question:

do I have to worry about data roaming charges within the lower 48? Doing a bit of traveling and it just occurred to me that a $350 bill wouldn't make a very good souvenir

Hmm...taking a cruise in a few weeks. Will definitely turn my phone off completely after leaving san diego.

Just take your SIM card out. The rest of your iPhone will continue to work.

There should be no extra charge anywhere in the US, at least as long as you see AT&T as the carrier on the phone. I would check with AT&T, though. I was just in Hawaii for a week and was able to sit on the beach and surf the web over EDGE. No extra charge.

iPhone generally wont show who you are roaming on unless you have 4EON (i think) added to your account. It has something to do with the roaming agreements.

Dial your number, when your voicemail picks up press *, the system should prompt you for your password just like normal voicemail.

To access voicemail manually on iPhone:

Enter the phone app, then go to keypad. Press and hold "1", and thats it! :D It is the same as every other AT&T/Cingular phone that I've EVER had...
