Hello,

So obviously everyone has different experiences etc but I’m wondering whether to update now or wait it out a bit longer?

I’m still on iOS 11 on my iPad Pro 9.7”.... please don’t burn me with stakes!!! LOL!

I was meaning to update to iOS 12 many times except for two things... one I was hesitant due to being burned by updates too many times and secondly I would backup my iPad ready to update and then life would always get it the way. If I was on iOS 12 I would probably wait it out.

Thanks

You should update, if for no other reason than that your device is not receiving security updates if you don’t. There have been a number of vulnerabilities patched since the release of iOS 12.

Despite the gloom and doom you may read here, iOS 13 (now iPadOS) is a huge step forward for the iPad, especially an iPad Pro. I won’t rehash all the features, as I’m sure you’re aware of them. Just don’t fall prey to all the naysayers; this is a big upgrade and worth it.

Finally, what are you “waiting out”?

Probably should’ve upgraded to ios12 while you still got the chance. For now, I would say wait it out until ipados 13 stabilized.

Yes I regret not updating to iOS 12.

I have previously done a lot of beta testing and was keen to jump right in and beta test iPadOS 13 but life got in the way and I just didn’t have the time or desire to deal with bugs at that particular time. I remember how rough iOS 11 was at first but I was perfectly happy to beta test it and deal with the bugs. I do like a lot of the new features in 13 but I just don’t need any extra frustration right now and from what I have read it sounds like 13 is still very very rough.

Thanks

I'd suggest scanning the forum and reading some posts here and in the iPad forum. There are a lot of people for whom 13 has been "very rough" or worse. It's pure fiction to say that that's incorrect. Obviously many users are not having problems (or are having problems they don't notice or don't care about), but many have serious problems. Which group you're going to fall into is impossible to say, but we know that once you upgrade to 13 you're there for good, for better or for worse.

It doesn't help to say this, but if you were on 12 it would be an easier decision in my opinion. Even at the end, 11 wasn't that great. 12 still runs like a dream on my 12.9" 2018 iPP and Mini 5.

I'm using iPadOS 13.2.2 on an iPad Air 3 and I'm not seeing any noticeable bugs. It feels like the app refresh bug has been resolved and the system seems fast and efficient. I don't use Exchange mail so I cannot comment on that. I use my iPad mainly for browsing the web, email, maps, notes, reminders and photos. I'm not a content creator, but I do design a wallpaper now and then in the Pixelmator app.

No one said that iPad OS has not had issues. But using the subset of people who post here or similar forums as your only bellwether is a mistake. Just like reviews of online products are skewed towards people who have a problem, the same is true here. The masses are not queueing up to tell us how great it is. Unless they have a problem, they are likely not even visiting this thread. Sure, some people have issues. Some are real problems, but many (most?) would be mere annoyances for all but the most discriminating users. Your email count badge is not reporting the right number? Annoying but not critical. The home bar is still there? Annoying for some (looking at you, @dan9700 ), but not a reason not to upgrade. Glyphs not lined up properly? Sure, shows some lack of polish, but are you willing to trade off the benefits of this massive update due to that? Some might be, but make your own decision. That would not be a decision I would make.

My personal point of view is that ios13 won't be going anywhere near my ipad air 2 until it I see improvements on my XR which, so far, has been ruined by ios 13. That said, I don't take photos on my ipad (shockingly bad camera) so if I got the same issues as with my xr it wouldn't be as noticeable. I enjoy being able to multitask without every app restarting, though, so I think I'll stick with ios 12.

I always update to the latest OS for safety and stability purposes. Sure there might be glitches here and there, but it's never bad to the point of bricking your device. At least not in my experience.

The RAM management is greatly improved in 13.3. If you're not into the beta thing at least you have that to look forward to in the coming month(s).

I have had no major issues with iOS 13 (errrr... iPadOS 13) on my iPad Pro. My usage is similar to revmacian: web browsing, notes, iMessage (when I'm away from my phone), light gaming (freecell and mahjong), looking up recipes, researching house projects, planning trips, light digital art creation, browsing photos, etc.

Other than the background refresh issue (which appears to be resolved) I have had nothing but good results with 13. The biggest plus is my battery life is better!

My iPad 9.7, iPhone 11 ProMax and iPhone 8 Plus, all running versions 13.x.x and very pleased with all of them. Every single phone/pad is different. No two are identical, apps, useage, model, version vary as much as the individual that uses them.

The thing is that that part of “different experiences” is what essentially makes any type of answers to that question fairly moot as there’s no way to really tell what might or might not apply to someone else.

This is true. To a large extent it's a crapshoot, with one potential exception. If CarPlay is important to you, it's possible that you could get to a greater degree of probability one way or the other with CarPlay by searching for other users with your specific make/model/year vehicle. Beyond that, the only thing we can say is that you know you can't go back.

The iPad Air 2 is such a great device, even today. At some point its 2GB RAM is going to become a limitation with new iOS versions. I don't know whether 13, when it stabilizes, is going to cause general performance issues. My wife's iPad Air 2 will certainly stay on 12. In particular, 2GB of RAM might make multitasking frustrating even after 13 is a mature product.
