Last night, I updated whatsapp on my iPhone, and the update seemed to take pretty much forever. I am not sure what the problem was, but the update meter barely moved, and stalled after a while. I tried everything, from turning on VPN, to trying to update over 4g, nothing. I have experienced this from time to time, but usually, turning on VPN allowed the app downloads / updates to resume at normal speed.

This left me with a blank whatsapp app (no icon) which promptly uninstalled itself after a while.

I rebooted my phone and redownloaded WhatsApp, which took more than half an hour (the meter moved, but very slowly). When I opened the app, I realised that my last icloud backup was almost a month ago. I lost a month's worth of chat history, but I suppose that is better than losing everything for good.

I suppose it was my oversight for not enabling nightly icloud backups for whatsapp, and it makes one more compelling reason to migrate to Telegram, but I am curious as to whether any of you have experienced this issue before? I admit I am a little upset over losing my chat history just like that, and I will try to remember to backup my phone to iTunes more regularly as well, but still, losing them to a botched software update?

Guess I just need a place to vent and rant for a while. Thanks all for listening.

People experience data loss all the time, which is why backup facilities exist. While I would always recommend Telegram & never touch WhatsApp, you can't really blame them in this case. Data corruption isn't a new thing & it's not going away (which is why you back up).

The same thing will happen one day when using Telegram (or anything else), you can't become immune to it (unless you back up).

Personally I would dig more into why you have to go to such lengths to initiate a download in the first place.

A lot of people around the world are complaining about storage space eaten up by last WA update on iOS ...

On the contrary.. It's 64.2 MB.. any storage being eaten up can be attributed to the app's data.

Just try it yourself. Before updating, I have 10GB storage free, after updating, only 3GB remained.

The issue is definitely here, alright?

Before this most recent update, the app never took up over 80MBs on my phone. Now its hitting 400MBs and climbing.
