Update stuck, can't boot MBP please help.

I've just run an update on my MBP and it's stuck on the grey screen with the apple logo and the progress bar showing complete. It's been stuck like this for well over an hour. I've tried turning it off and back on again and it just goes straight back to this screen. Is there anyway to fix this without doing a full reboot/reinstall from time machine as last time I did this it took about 10hours as I have over 900gb data on the hard drive, plus my time machine disk is at work and I won't be able to restore until the morning

Any help appreciated.

P.S. I can't launch in safe mode or in diagnostic mode.

I know this doesn't help you right now, but…

… this is why it's useful to keep around a "bootable cloned backup" drive (of your internal).

If you had one nearby, you could be back up and running in a couple of minutes (assuming there hasn't been some kind of "interrupted firmware update" that has otherwise messed up the computer).

So I restored my computer from time machine and everything was fine. I decided to try the update again to see if it was just a bad install last time and it crashed the system again and I've had to do yet another restore from time machine. This time though the update didn't download and just installed so I assume that the actual install software is on my system somewhere. Is there a way to locate this and delete it so that I can re-download the update to see if it was just a bad download first time around?
