UPDATE: I've decided to change this project and make it a Tiger app shop instead. Why? Off the top of my head, here's a list:
  • Tiger is actually used on PowerPC Macs bc of performance. No one uses Panther for anything
  • The website is guarenteed to display correctly on TenFourFox, and on top of that, I can make a FoxBox and it can feel like an app
  • It should be easier to find apps for it
I don't know why I didn't do this to start... I mean, the PowerPC Archive is moving towards Leopard and Intel it seems (with macArchive), so we need a Tiger source for apps. I guess I thought there was already something like this.

ORIGINAL INFORMATION:

Uh oh, here we go again :p.

Recently, I've been working with Wordpress a lot, and an idea just hit me - this if perfect for making a Panther app store.

Why not? I can easily manage categories, featured apps, even comments and ratings, so much easier than I could have done manually. So, I'm announcing the beginning of the development for a Panther App Shop.

Don't get your hopes too high. It's going to be a website, not an app, which should be loadable with Classillia. However, I plan to give it an app-store like interface with all the apps listed in the Panther Thread, as well as additional suggestions below, as long as you pair them with download links.

Why am I doing this? I don't care about PowerPC much anymore, let alone Panther. Truth is, this is a great community, and if I can contribute a few hours every weekend to something like this, why wouldn't I? I like working with wordpress and I think it'll be fun to design the interface and a challenge to keep it easily loadable for old Macs. I look forward to helping the Panther community and making a tool that (hopefully) people use.

If anyone can help with the project or has suggestions, I'd appreciate it. I don't yet have a timetable for a release date, but expect it to take awhile, because, as I said, I just plan to work on this a little every weekend. I've just got this thread up to hear suggestions 'n' stuff.

Well great. If only I had my affairs in order and already had my G4 happily up and running with a Panther install, then I could be a lot more useful in this.

But putting that aside until then...

When do we start? :D

You have any Xcode experience in Panther? :D

I have an indigo G3 that’s been dying for something to test. Not to mention my PBG4 that I honestly haven’t used since I wrote my first book last year
Hmm... maybe you can do me a quick favor. Get it online and use whatever browser is the most up to date and try loading this website:

clevelandsportstwist.000webhostapp.com

That's not technically released yet, by the way . It just uses a lot of stuff I'd be using in the app shop and I'd like to see how it works on Panther.

Sure thing. I’ll have to test it on the PowerBook in leopard. Wait one

EDIT: site loaded quick. Idk what host it’s through but it loaded quick. I’d say you’re a go for using that.

Nice! Does it look good though? Some of the pictures are blank, that's the way it's supposed to be.

If you're really feeling helpful, shoot me a few photos. ;)

I didn’t see pictures. I got referred to a “you can buy this domain” page. You sure you’ve published correctly? I’d try godaddy too. I used my book website with it.

Wierd. I'm transfering the real website anyways, maybe there was a problem there. Try this link, it should lead to a real website (the one I'm collabing with other cleveland fans on):

That's funny. Works for me and everyone involved in the project. try this, I just copied/pasted this time. Maybe I mistyped something:
http://clevelandsportstwist.x10.bz/

If that doesn't work than the problem is on your end.

Works for me. NewMoon browser on MacBook Pro running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6.

Also works in TenFourFox on a PowerBook G4 running OS X Leopard 10.5.8.

FWIW

Works great on my end. PMG5 on 10.4.11 w/ TFF FPR9.
[doublepost=1536900895][/doublepost]Anything else we can do?
Thanks to you both, but I was curious if it would load on Panther :p. Glad it looks good!

UPDATE:

I've decided to go to a Tiger app shop instead, see the edit to the original post. I'm getting pretty hyped for this project, I think wordpress is going to work so nicely for an app store. Drop any suggestions if you have em!

I’m with z970 on this one. Though there are few apps for panther, it would be nice to have a resource outside of Mac garden in case my G3 ever fails. Mac Garden can be a nightmare to navigate sometimes and downloading things can get a little congested.

The Macintosh Garden has apps for both Mac OS 9 and early versions of Mac OS X like Jaguar and Panther in one place. That’s what makes it such a useful resource.

Sure the Macintosh Garden could use some improvement, but a Panther-specific App Store with less availability isn’t going to offer much of an advantage over it. Most Panther Macs aren’t even connected to the internet.

Of course it is, and of course they are.

How else are you going to download old software, without having to load up a browser?? I think Panther deserves at least that much.

(On that note, see my latest post in the Panther Thread for a possible way to make using browsers easier by updating the certificates.)

Will do. My iMac G3 could use some TLC.

Oh, I recently had much fun building up an iMac-G3 from the scratch using just the original install-media with os9 and a copy of Classilla. My personal contest (as an os9 novice) was, to get as far as possible without any help from outside of the iMac/os9.
Classilla did manage MacintoshGarden and a lot of other sites perfectly (doing this it's very own way and taking into account, that it's a 20y old system).
Same is possible with OS X 10.0 - 10.3 with Classic.

Sorry, but I believe, that will forever be the closest way to get access to software using exclusively a pre-Tiger-system.

@z970mp you're right, I forgot all about the PPCAppStore! That's our Tiger App Store for now and I don't want to take that away from him. My main concern with a Panther shop, however, is that my wordpress site won't load. No way I can do this with straight up HTML and Css so I'm stuck with wordpress, or I could go with iWeb if I had too, but I want to stay away from that for obvious reasons.

Can someone test clevelandsportstwist.x10.bz on Panther please? Really curious if that goes well. If not, things get tricky.

I'm gonna contact the PPCAppStore owner, have a few ideas. As of right now, this is still the Panther App Shop, regardless of the title I'm too lazy to edit.

Your site looks fine in Safari 1.3, Camino 1.6.11 and iCab 4.9 on Panther.

Classilla 9.3.3 also renders the page, with just a few stylesheet issues. But it's still usable.

A better alternative to iWeb is RapidWeaver by RealMac Software.

Version 3.5.0 was the last to support 10.3.9 and can be downloaded on the Wayback machine;
https://web.archive.org/web/20061116232628/https://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/

I'm sure if you contacted the developer and asked to purchase a license for this old version they would help you out. They may even feel generous given the noble cause.

i looked at the up and running ppcappstore update log for the first time since i downloaded it and i realized i was actually mentioned for helping him find the updated tigersierrathemev2(then again i should have seen that coming when the app got an update a couple weeks after i emailed him).
