Update to Sierra again?

So I run a 2012 Mac Mini as my main computer right now. I had put Sierra on it and it was abysmal! Took forever to boot, forever to load anything etc. I went back to el Capitan and had planned on getting a new Mac. After Apple didn't release new iMacs, I took the advice of some people on the board, took out my HDD and 4 GB of RAM and put in an SSD and 16 GB RAM. Runs like a dream now.

So I'm considering going back to Sierra again now that I have the SSD and 4X the RAM, but I'm a little gun shy to go through all that again just to have it be slow as d*cks again. Should I go for it or be happy with el Capitan?

i have literally just gone back to sierra, i am on a 16gb i7 2.5ghz 512gb MacBook pro with DGPU and it ran like a dog last time i updated, thought id try again as i have only just moved to mac so getting used to stuff.

Best thing imo to do would be a time machine backup and then try installing sierra, if it isn't any good, you can always go back.

At the moment things are slower but i know its indexing etc. I would give it a go, more memory and ssd will def make a difference

Make a clone backup first. This way if there is a problem you can easily revert to El Capitan until you sort out your Sierra issues.

Next decide if you want to do an install over your current version of macOS or if you want to do a clean install of Sierra. If you haven't done a clean install in some time, you might want to start fresh.

Create a Clone backup:

A clone is an exact bootable copy of your internal drive. Unlike standard copying of all files to another drive, the clone software copies hidden files along with other in-use files that are not available when you copy over files to another drive.

It might be better to wait 3-4 updates before trying Sierra again, since your Mac works with El Capitan right now why take changes?

If Sierra has some "must have" feature then go ahead, otherwise there is no rush.

Make sure to clone your drive first to be on the safe side...

I went straight back to El Cap. everything was slower on Sierra. Stutters etc.

Thanks guys. I ended up taking the plunge and everything works great! I didn't do a clean install because this was a new SSD that I had just done a clean install of El Capitan on, so I figured I was good.

I too have gone back to El Cap on my late 2013 13" rMBP and 2015 12" rMB, after erroneously running Sierra since its public beta days,

it simply runs better, and battery is better on both. Both are 8gb and have SSD too (of course).

I have a 40GB partition on my late 2013 with Sierra, so when it's finally fully polished, I be will aware and then decide what to do.. but not holding my breath its on 10.12.1 and not going to ride the beta wave/ boot up into it that often, except maybe morbid curiosity.

I don't really miss anything from Sierra, to be honest. Except copy and paste from computer to phone, but its delayed and a lot of the times doesn't work, and don't use it THAT often. Never use siri on my phone, let alone computer. I would miss Safari if it was shoe horned, but the latest Safari works fine on 10.11
