I made the mistake of installing the 10.12.1 update today and now my audio output is terrible. I'm running a late 2012 mini, using the digital audio output to an outboard DAC to powered speakers. Yesterday the audio was fine. Today, after the update, low output volume and high distortion. Any thoughts?

Sorry keys, but no change. The analog output is fine, but the digital is still terrible.
have you tried unplugging the cable connecting your mac to the dac and plugging it back in again?
there's a program for changing digital audio settings. As my imac is twiddling it's thumbs, (see above) I can't recall exactly what it's called, but I think it's audio midi setup and i think it's in tbe utility folder.
double check bitrate and frequency. (cd audio is 16 bit 44.1 khz, but there are worse settings).

jerwin, thanks, but I tried both to no avail. I unplugged the cable to try it in my MacBook Pro and found the same problem. Everything was fine yesterday, but it's been awful since that system update.

Other than restoring from a Time Machine backup, or trying an OS repair (hold CMD+R on startup, select 'reinstall macOS'), it may be best to get advice straight from the horse's mouth: support@audioengineusa.com
Spent some time online last night with Apple Tech Support. Had to reboot to OS Utilities and repair the hard drives on both computers. That worked. It seems that the update corrupted my drives. I can't imagine that both computers would have the same problem after an update would be a coincidence.
