I had to reinstall my Brother MFC L8900CDW printer driver. Apple defaulted to Airprint instead of CUPS. With CUPS, I could set it so that the default print options on the printer defaulted to Duplex printing. With the Airprint driver, I can't find a way to do this.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Do you have the duplex checkbox on the main print sheet?
If yes, check how the "Preset" popup menu is set. You can set it to use the latest settings, or make a preset and set it to use the latest selected preset.

I'm guessing there is no way to do this with the Airprint driver. It's really a major limitation as I want to default back to tray 2, duplex. If I use last used settings, I'm afraid I'll accidentally print documents on checks or letterhead.

Then create a preset with the settings you want, it's not hard.

Maybe I'm not making myself clear. I have several presents that I rotate through (single/double-sided, B&W/color, business check, personal check, letterhead, etc.). If I select personal check, it automatically pulls from tray 3. Letterhead pulls from tray 4.

I could set it to use last settings, but I'm afraid I'll accidentally burn through 20 checks if I forget to select another preset.

I have traditionally set it to go back to default settings after each print job, and with a CUPS driver, I could configure default printer settings that it would adhere to.

The issue isn't setting up another preset. It's trying to find a way to make the default print setting default to duplex.

You might be able to change the default via the CUPS utilities, e.g. web interface.

You can enable the web interface with this command:
Code:
cupsctl WebInterface=yes

Then open this page in your browser: http://localhost:631/printers

From there you can change the settings of the printer.

@KALLT That's what I've done in the past, but the new macOS and BrotherMFC drivers are Secure Airprint now. Maybe I could select having an older version of macOS and download the CUPS driver.

Your printer probably doesn’t expose the duplexing setting via AirPrint. It might indeed be possible to install the older Brother drivers, e.g. when you check for Catalina drivers.
