Hello, I'm a n00b here so please don't hurt me!

I've just purchased an iPhone (2G 8GB) on eBay. It was bought in the UK originally so is a British phone. However, the seller is from outside the UK and claims the phone doesn't work where they are unless on a UK Sim, which is an O2 Sim.
They have tried unlocking it before posting but had no such luck, and said each time they did get it unlocked it locked back to the O2 UK Sim.

Thing is, I've just restored the phone and it also updated it at the same time. Now the phone won't accept the Sim the phone came with (the one they said that works) nor mine, both being O2.

What can I do? I don't want to hack my phone.

The message I get when the phone is plugged in to the computer is:
"No SIM card installed - insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iPhone"

My own Sim works with my LG Viewty fine, and has no PIN lock.

Any help is appreciated :)
