I updated Safari yesterday when the update was made available. Later in the evening, I was watching Netflix and it seemed like every ten minutes a pop up window appeared. I looked for a preference to disable it but could not find one, it was quite annoying and am curious if anyone else had the same experience.

You need to install a pop up blocker better than the one that comes with Safari. I use this one and have no problem with pop ups. From the Mac App Store:

Another app to try is called Adblock Plus. I was using Wipr but now have switched to using Adblock Plus. Works well for blocking ads in YouTube.

I just started up Netflix and grabbed a screenshot.

Safari→Preferences→Websites→Pop-Up Windows, set Netflix to Block or Block and Notify. That should help.

What an aggravating time, I have added Adblock and double checked it but those pop up windows are crazy. I’ve checked both “Block”and “Block and Notify” and they continue to plague me. I certainly don’t want to be working with a client and have the Poker website ad pop up. Perhaps it’s time to try another browse.

There is no way Netflix is trying to show you an ad in a popup. Make sure you don't have some adware or malware installed on your computer or on your router.
Try to run Malwarebytes ( https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/ ) for example to check for malware.
