Hi all,

Was on 14.2 on my MBP 16", updated to 14.3 and being back to Apple after 15 years I have a couple of questions if that's ok!

  1. After updating and rebooting, it asked me to login back to iCloud and setup filevault etc (I have it turned off) as if it was the first time? Asked if I wanted Dark or Light mode etc. Is this normal?!
Not used to this, thought the update would be like Win11 has been in the past few years, essentially seamless unless it's a MAJOR feature update.

thanks!

Ok, but it's completely offtopic and nothing to do with my question. Why do people on this forum do this all the time? 😂
It is a safety matter; we could ignore it, but why let you experience the down side of settings?
It's like NOT telling someone that his lights are broken.

That's hard to say, because you are running kind of non-standard. Most of us are logged into iCloud and have FileVault turned on. But I will tell you that my Mac did none of that after the upgrade.

As you can see in my signature I just updated 2 machines to 14.3
None of your experiences are mine.
But ... because of the rebooting I had to switch off file sharing, reboot again, and switch it on again.

Now, you might try to remember if you have changed any setting in the system's that might cause what happened.
That may be a tough job.
I made a list of changed settings, just in case ...
Success.

P.S.: I never used iCloud.

Didn't change anything. The only thing I can remember that could be somewhat related was that I was subbed to icloud 200GB plan but activated an Apple One 1 month trial yesterday. That's all I can think of. Nothing else. Every single system setting is exactly as it was

Why do you have FileVault turned off?
I have it turned on off and my internal 1tb on M2 Max Studio, and all my external drives. I have it that way because when ever itunr on FileVault or set TM to be encrypted. My internal an external drives (8) becomes a total mess. I think it might have something to do with the firmware on the external drives.

As far as I know (and so I was told by APPLE support) file vault only concerns your internal drive(s)
and replaces the 'superuser' access by power-up password. Setting provides you with a very long code to undo it.
I have several external drives and those are NOT affected by file vault.
So, please protect your internal drive again.

ny somewhere
lots of people (myself included) do not use filevault, and the sky has not, in fact, fallen.

i see this sometimes with system updates (and it's not consistent between my 2 macs, both on the same OSes), where certain options (ie signing into icloud) are offered (or requested). do what you want to do (or not do) and you should be fine.

Updated today from Ventura, unfortunately 14.3 makes every file saved onto my exfat usb stick from mac an extra on windows Visible „._“ file. Ventura managed to keep these files hidden

"Why do you have FileVault turned off?"

I've been a Mac user for 37 years now.
I have NEVER used Filevault, not once, ever.
Never will.
I WANT my data to be "easy to get at".
(I realize that some other users may have specific reasons to differ).

I upgraded my 2019 15” MBP from 14.2.1 to 14.3 and it also asked me to login to iCloud even though I was logged in and using it in 14.2.1 before the update started and also asked me to turn on FileVault.

I believe FileVault was more useful when internal drives were easy to access/remove. Since MacBooks with T2 chips/secure enclaves and soldered storage, I haven’t used FileVault. But my reason is mainly because I want my boot wallpaper to match my desktop (single user) and with FileVault on it defaults to the Sonoma landscape on boot. Am I willing to risk my data just for a wallpaper? Yes. :)

Also a random firmware note. Last month when I went to update from Big Sur I forgot to delete my fingerprints (note: I usually do a clean install/wipe/erase for new macOS installs which for me includes logging out of iCloud, deleting fingerprints, and various other housekeeping items). So when I installed Sonoma it told me it couldn’t save any new fingerprints but also wouldn’t let me delete old ones. So I booted to recovery and used a terminal command to clear the T2 chip. Doing so cleared fingerprints but also bricked my machine. Had to use another MacBook running Apple Configurator to restore firmware. After the restore it would boot fine and resave fingerprints. But beneath MacBook Pro in the About This Mac, it no longer showed the model, year (“15-inch, 2019”) or Startup Disk. With the latest update to 14.3 and the firmware update, it has restored my model, year, and startup disk info. So that was a pleasant surprise.
