The USB camera adapter does not work on all external drives. It depends on how much power the external drive requires. And, the lightning port on the USB camera adapter does not power the external drive, it only powers the iPad itself.

What about the Lightning to USB 3 Camera adapter? What if i connect the USB-C port to a power supply? Would it work?

The camera adapter you mentioned has a Lightning port, but that port powers the iOS device, it does not power the USB peripheral. What you will need is a hub that has external power capability - plugs into a wall outlet - or something other than trying to draw too much power from an iOS device directly.

Using the above with a USB thumb drive, I get the message "USB DISK: This accessory requires too much power". Plugging in a (powered) lightning cable removes this error and the USB thumb drive becomes accessible in the files app.

I’m glad to hear that works for you.

I’m sorry but i‘m not sure what ”Plugging in a (powered) lightning cable removes this error and the USB thumb drive becomes accessible in the files app.” means.

I assume that with that adapter the lightning port is plugged into the ipad, the usb port is plugged into usb drive. So the extra power should be plugged into the usb-c drive?

Well, it should since it's exactly the advice that Apple gave the OP...

There's a male lightning port on one end of the adaptor and a female lightning port next to the USB-A port. There are no USB c ports on lightning to USB camera adaptor. The USB drive goes into the USB port, and the lightning cable goes into the lightning port. The other end of the lightning cable must be powered, by plugging it into a wall adaptor, computer, battery pack, whatever.
