Haven't kept up with the rumor mill, so please forgive the newbie question.

Are there expected updates coming for the Nano soon and if so, what are they and when are they likely?

I need some on-the-go quick video camera and at the same time, my old 2G Nano is old and beat up and in need of a replacement.

So rather than buy something like a Flip Video, I was thinking I could kill two birds with one stone and buy a new Nano. Get great song capacity for gym time, and also have something extremely small for quick videos of the kids as needed.

Thanks in advance.

My 16Gb 5th gen really does well in a pinch. I captured dozens of short videos of my kid at Disney World this past Christmas holiday, and still had room for over 1,000 of my fave songs AND a couple of dozen cartoon shorts and music videos.

My advice: Don't wait for what might come down the road in four or five months. Head over to Apple's online refurb store right now and get a 16 Gb refurb nano. (Unless you simply must have laser personalization, in which case purchasing new is your only choice.)

By the way, I have a 2nd gen nano, too. While it is "old" in comparison to my 5th gen, mine still works well as a backup player. I've managed to keep the exterior from getting too beat up by encasing it in a myTunes clear plastic case that I bought for the princely sum of $1 at (what else?) a "dollar store".

Awesome - thanks for the feedback. That's a good suggestion. I'll have to see what they are going for. If the new ones were out in June or so, it might be worth the wait. But if it's September, ehh. I'm impatient. :)

but this is unpredictable

Actually it is; in the past few years Apple has held iPod events in the 1st or 2nd week of September. Gone are the days of improvements and updates every six months. The iPod has it's market well established, and is a proven and established product and has since settled into a one year cycle.

32GB Nano?

My library is 28GB. I am waiting for the next Rev up to 32GB...fingers crossed.

Until then I'll just continue on with my 8GB "fattie" iPod.

Given that a formatted 32 GB iPod would be about 29 GBs usable size, you'd probably outgrow one very quickly.

Oh and yes, September is highly likely (normally almost straight after the free iPod promo).
