If all I do with my Windows XP VMWare Machine is run Quicken, should I even bother with downloading and installing software updates from Windows Update?

Yes, but I recommend just waiting for XP SP3 in a few days, or getting it off the torrent sites now. Easier than doing them all separately.

If you have it set to Auto critical updates will be downloaded automatically anyway. If you don't care about the rest of it, then forget it.

I wouldn't bother. Windows Updates are a headache and its not likely that having the latest updates will make quicken work any better.
