Having added a Crucial MX500 SSD to the MacPro 4.1, I decided to bring its firmware up to date.

Downloaded the updater and followed the directions posted on their website. Burned the .iso disk-image to a CD. Booted with the option key. As directed I selected the CD volume "Windows", which failed to boot.

Turns out the directions are FuBARed. When I tried again and selected the CD volume "EFI-Boot". The updater ran automatically and flawlessly. To be safe I removed all other drives when running the update.

As an aside Crucial seems to say the only way to run their firmware updater is from a burned CD. Which will leave any late Apple users who have installed one of these in the optical bay out of luck. They could try using CCC or SuperDuper to clone the .iso disk-image to a USB stick and see how that goes.

The firmware can be easily updated via Windows, CD is not the only way to do it. I updated my MX500 about a month ago.

I just received an MX500 from Crucial in a warranty exchange and notice it's current. However, I have a few others in customer machines.

Are there known issues cause by having out of date firmware on a Mac?

I don't think that would work but it's certainly not necessary.

Use Terminal.
