Hey guys,

I was wondering if I could get some help updating my iPhone. I am jailbroken and have firmware version 3.0. I am not unlocked. I just need to be at 3.1 to install certain apps from the app store.

How do I upgrade a jailbroken phone and keep all of my Cydia programs? If there is already a thread on this please point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

When you upgrade your phone you will lose all your Cydia packages. I would recommend investing in a copy of PkgBackup, available from the Cydia Store. It will keep a list of your installed packages in a contact, allowing you to automate the process or reinstalling them. It's well worth the money.

You do not mention what model of iPhone you have. How you should go about upgrading depends very much on that information and whether you have your SHSH on file with Saurik.

If you have a 3G, you can shift-restore to any version of the firmware and then jailbreak with Redsn0w.

If you have a 3GS with SHSH on file, you can shift-restore to whatever version of the firmware you have SHSH on file for. You will have to edit your hosts file before doing so.

If you have a 3GS without its SHSH on file, then you can upgrade only to a custom firmware made with PwnageTool.

Please let us know what model you have and, if a 3GS, whether you have your SHSH on file and we can advise further.

In that case you can install that latest firmware, 3.1.3, and jailbreak using Redsnow 0.9.3. If you unlock do not do this as you will lose the unlock.

So the steps would be:
1.) Download PkgBackup
2.) Backup data using said program
3.) Sync phone, say "yes" to iPhone update
4.) Re-jailbreak using Redsnow
5.) upload my backup from PkgBackup (however that works)

How much is PkgBackup? Is it easy to use?

If your iPhone doesn't automatically backup when you sync you will have to right click it in the left pane of iTunes and select Backup. Do that after step 2. I haven't ever used PkgBackup but it seems easy to use. I'm not sure of it's price. Please note if you unlock your iPhone you will no longer be able to unlock it if you update it.
