Hi, I've been held back on Mavericks for reasons I won't get into but I'm now looking to finally update to a later OS.

I have a lot of apps I use on a daily basis such as Final Cut Pro X, Aperture, Excel and Photoshop. Is it worth me updating to El Capitan first to smoothen out any software issues I might encounter before then moving onto Sierra/High Sierra?

I know Aperture for example is discontinued but it might help to migrate the images into the Photos app through El Capitan rather than Sierra where I might encounter too many compatibility issues.

Thanks for any advice as to how I should best plan my OS update.

Macbook Air 256GB End 2012, i7, 8GB RAM....I am slow adopter of OS....my thinking is why &^%$ with it if it's working ok.

Been on Mountain Lion for yonks....works great, fast...but I wanted to try some new app versions and updated browsers, youtube etc.

So went to Mavericks for about 2 days...and then to El Capitan. (I like to stay about 3 generations behind so all kinks in an OS get ironed out.)

Updated to new versions for a few apps....Adobe CC 2017, Microsoft Office 2016, iWork etc.

All working good.

Happy with my decision.

In short...do it.

Awesome, yeah think I'm gonna jump to El Capitan and smoothen everything out before I go on to Sierra.

I'm the same as you here, I don't wanna screw something up that's working fine but I also do want to try new features of apps that are only available in later OS's and general security improvements etc!
