Updating my computer on someone else's computer

Just wondering that say my computer or service is broken down, can I update my laptop computer or apps using someone else's computer without compromizing their computer or mine? Can I just use my user name and password to complete a download on my computer using their computer? I don't have the issue now, but I was just wondering if I could do that. I am pretty sure it's possible to do.

Sort of... partly. This would not get yourt apps on there, but if all your Documents were in say something like Dropbox or iCloud Drive, a friend could add an account for you to there Mac, then in that account you could download and work on documents from iCloud or Dropbox and come very close to mimicking what was on your old computer. But the apps are normallt installed in a /Applications folder, so you would neeed to use apps already installed on the Mac ior install them yourself.

But sure, if say all you wanted to do was work on MS Office documents and the other Mac already has Office installed, all you would need to do is login to an account setup for you on that Mac and access the documents online like I described and you would be back in business.

I guess I misread the OP...I thought he was asking if he could "update" OS X and his apps.

I read it as JamesMB did as well.

But still, "Sort of... partly". Can download DMGs for the apps that need updating. Can download El Capitan as well. Just need to drag the downloads to a USB/external drive on computer A, plug in to computer B, open and run the installers in the DMGs.

But, things like using App Store to get the latest updates, I'd avoid doing that: now you are "messing up" someone else's computer.

Okay, thanks for all the replies. I now know what to do in case something happens to my computer or my (local internet provider)
