Is there a way to update the M1 MBA to 11.1 before running migration assistant? I want to copy a profile from my old MBA to the new one, but I was thinking I should update them both to 11.1 before running migration assistant. Any tips? I suppose I could create a temporary account just to get into the new MBA to update it, then run migration assistant, and delete the temporary account?

Sorry to revive this, but I'm curious if you pulled this off.

I am getting a new MBA tomorrow and do not want to migrate my user. I want to start fresh, as the last migration left me with some undeleteable files.

Like you, I know you can do it if you migrate a user from the newer version, but I want to update, then set everything up fresh.

I realize I can make a Big Sur install USB tonight from the app store and wipe it/install it on first boot. But that has been hit or miss for me on M1 Mac's. In fact, I thought I had bricked one, but I got it back.

Did you find a way or is the USB way the only real way to update before setup?

Thanks.

It turns out that migration assistant will wipe out any old data on the device. So I created a temp account, updated the MacBook Air to the latest os, then used Migration assistant.
