It's been a while since I've owned a mac, but have just treated myself to a 14" Macbook Pro. I purchased my mac on Amazon on 17th February and went to buy AppleCare+ last night and the Apple site said my new Macbook Pro wasn't eligible.

I checked the warranty coverage and Apple is showing the warranty expires on 24th December 2022, so I need to update the info Apple have and tell them I only purchased the laptop on 17th February.

How do I go about doing this? Is it a relatively simple process or should I just return this to Amazon and buy from Apple direct?

I'd be a tish concerned because the warrenty is meant to start on the purchase date.

Me personally, I'd probably return it and buy direct from Apple.

Just spoke to Apple and the computer was apparently 'activated' on 24th December 2021, however, I bought it new from Amazon on 17th February. They said the department that is responsible is closed at the weekend so I need to phone back on Monday but I'm not convinced I've been sold a brand new laptop.

As long as the warranty is sorted I don't mind as Amazons price was very close to the education price, but I'm not going to keep it if it's at the expense of not being able to buy AppleCare+.

It may be "new" if brought from Amazon - hard to say how that process works. It may be December is when the seller purchased it from Apple, then "resold" it for a cheaper price.

If you're lucky, Apple will get you sorted OK.

Thanks for the update!

Me, personally? I would return it and purchase direct from Apple with a warranty that actually starts from the time you made the purchase. It eliminates any confusion and you work with Apple directly. You purchased a product that already has two months of warranty that you’re not receiving. Now, is that a big deal? Probably not, but it’s the principle behind the matter.

So did Amazon advertise it as “new” or open box (or whatever)? All my various Apple products I ever owned started their warranty from activation and yours apparently was activated in Dec.
While Apple might end up selling you AC+, you did NOT receive a NEW product. If that is what you thought you were buying, return it. Was it sold by Amazon directly or from one of their partners? Might want to take it up with Amazon.

Thanks. This kinda echos my thoughts although I would likely insist on a replacement from Amazon as they are much better at accepting returns if there's an issue down the line.

It's not so much the two months of warranty that I have an issue with, but the fact I can't buy AppleCare+.

So, apparently, when I purchased the MacBook Pro from Amazon, I had purchased an 'Amazon Warehouse' deal which was 'Used - Like New'. The description on the listing was 'Item is in original packaging, but packaging has damage.'.

I have spoken to Amazon as I don't feel that the above description was a fair representation of an item that was clearly a customer return and therefore had 2 months of warranty less than a new product would have, so it should not have been sold as 'Used-Like New'.

Amazon have agreed and have offered me a £250 refund to keep the laptop making it £1,500 (£400 off retail), however, I am still going to try and get Apple to update the warranty or at least sell me AppleCare+.

The fact that Amazon have offered a £250 refund though is making it a tough decision as to whether to keep it or return it if Apple don't agree to amend the warranty.

Me, on an expensive laptop like this, I would not go without AC+, but if you get Apple to cover it, I think you got a great deal

Amazon is doing what Amazon does to keep you from returning it. Since you bought an Warehouse deal and I am sure somewhere in the fine print it says that damaged box could mean customer return and it is your due diligence to determine the exact condition before you buy it. That being said it is pretty shady of Amazon to sell a warehouse deal that doesn't specifically say in selling description that the unit was open box and not just a damaged box.

Either way Apple has no obligation to sell you Apple Care +. They might and then you got a great deal but they might not and then you have to ask yourself is the savings on the front end worth the same of a repair down the road? You might never need Apple Care + and then again you might have an issue with SSD or display down the line and that repair out of warranty might cost more than your savings today.

Personally I only buy Apple products from Apple. For a cheaper Apple device like an iPad Air or MacBook Air on sale I would purchase from Amazon or other retailer. For a 14" or 16" M1 based MBP I would ONLY buy from Apple and I would purchase Apple Care +. These machines are expensive and everything is soldered and part of the SOC so if any issues happen down the road repairs will most likely be very expensive. I would talk with Amazon and tell them of your frustrations and the product description as misleading then ask to return the Laptop and ask for a credit to my Amazon Account for all the trouble. They may give you $50 just for your trouble?

Good Luck either way!!

Just an update, I finally got round to ringing Apple again today. I forwarded them the proof of purchase from Amazon and they have updated the date of purchase on the warranty for my Macbook Pro to the date that I actually purchased it. They also confirmed that as I'm 'well within the 60 days of purchase' I can now go ahead and purchase AppleCare+ so as soon as I get home I will be purchasing that :)

I received my new 16" M2 Pro MBP 32gb/1tb yesterday that I ordered from Apple. I also have an M1 Mini 16gb/512gb that I bought in July 2022.

In About This Mac the Mini and the new MBP both show the same day in July 2023 as the warranty expiration. It is hard to believe that the exact day is a coincidence. I do not know what to do to fix this. The July date is correct on my Mini, but it is wrong on the new MBP.

By the way, here is my thread about the various problems I have had since getting the MBP yesterday. :(
