I just tried updating my iBook G3 from 10.2 to 10.2.8. When it was finished, the OS was running, but my display was messed up. There were horizontal lines and distortion, and I could barely see the icons. It looked kind of like an old Atari video game. I didn't find an answer on Apple's support pages. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

did you update the firmware on the ibook before updating, i know i had a similar problem on my imac when i updated it to panther.marktoo said:

Sometimes people have reported unrelated hardware failure after system upgrades for unknown reasons. Like several people on MR reported their hard drives failing SMART right after upgrading to Tiger. Perhaps because of stress on the system during updating? Dunno....

I tried it through software update, then tried it by downloading the disc image, but I got the same problem both ways. If it was a logic board issue, why would it go back to normal after I restored 10.2? I don't know. Maybe I should just lug my old 50-pound iMac to the office instead. At least it had no problem updating.

Sorry, I meant that if the problem went away when you boot off the restore disc, you can rule out logic board issues....
You may have completely lost display calibration. Have you attempted to run through that again?
System Preferences > Display > Color > Calibrate.

Well, I can't recalibrate the display because that distortion is so bad that I can't see what I'm clicking on. And the PRAM didn't fix anything. Thank you for the suggestions, though. Someone on another forum suggested the logic board, also, so maybe I'm in trouble. Or I guess I can just continue to use only 10.2.
My local apple techie told me the other week that it is really common for graphic cards in G3's to crap out when you update. Ive seen that happen in a G3 iBook too and its sounds just like what your experiencing.
However, it also sounds like a problem Ive been experiencing with my displays recently, today I was just messing around (not knowing all that much about what I was doing) I went into the Utilities folder then clicked on the app. ColorSync Utility and did a verify and repair on that and it "seems" to have sorted the problem. Whether this has helped I dunno, but its food for thought. It might help if I knew what I was doing

Update: I tried Colorsync, but no improvement. I also tried updating incrementally instead of using the combo updater. Going to 10.2.1 was fine, but as soon as I installed 10.2.2, the display went nuts again. I tried repairing permissions before and after installation, but it did nothing. I also ran hardware test, but it found no problems.
