So, it's been some time since I've jailbroken my iPhone and my first time in a long time is 8.3. I want to update to 8.4 and jailbreak that version, but I'm afraid I'll lose what I've got on it so far. I don' have many tweaks installed except for ppsspp, which is really the only one I use all the time. Is there any way to jailbreak my device without losing everything I have that relates to cydia? Or should I just email myself the stuff related to ppsspp like the game saves in case I lose it when the phone wipes everything when I update, or is there a method to not lose anything when updating to 8.4?

If you can backup your game saves to your computer, ALWAYS do this any don't trust cloud save option. When you update or restore to current iOS version, it may or may not keep the settings. Always note down everything you have installed in case it doesn't keep this info on the update/restore.

With that being said, every time that I've restored to current iOS and restore backup and jailbreak (backup carried across iOS 5-8.4 updates and associated JBs), it's retained by prior settings. But manually backing up stuff best to avoid issues if anything bad where to happen.

Here is my process for updgrading/re-jailbreaking.

1. Connect to iTunes and do a full backup.
2. Put my iPhone in DFU mode (not necessary for most people, but I have a tweak installed that prevents a direct non-DFU mode iTunes restore)
3. Restore/Upgrade.
4. Set phone up as new.
5. Jailbreak.
6. Restore phone from iTunes backup.
7. Done.

That's my process. The DFU mode as I mentioned is not necessary for most people, but I do recommend it as a way to avoid any potential problems. But that's just me.

Exactly what I just did to our 4 devices. Went pretty smooth.
I'm not sure what is better than 8.3 but I was on one of the 8.1 versions with all of our devices so I was beyond ready. Plus, I still use beats music and wanted apple music.

I take screen shots of the tweak listings in Cydia's Installed tab and save them to the Camera Roll, then transfer them to my PC. No extra programs involved. That way I will add them back one at a time if I really miss them and can also see if there are any conflicts.

I did that too. Then someone point out that if you install a Cydia app called AppInfo (which I already had installed, BTW) that you can email yourself a list of your installed tweaks/apps.

Might be an easier way to handle that.

So I actually managed to upgrade the phone, but I decided to skip the DFU mode deal, and now I see why you said to put it into DFU mode for a reason. The phone would not update at all and it was a pain to get it done. Took about 2 hours but it finally got done.

Yeah, it's not a necessary step but I have found it just eliminates any potential problems.

I have taken a screenshot of this post for future reference, good info thanks.

Why are you setting up as new but then restoring from iTunes backup? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of setting up as new?
I certainly like the convenience of restoring from backup but have always heard that setting up new avoids problems and saves disk space.

I do it this way just to jailbreak. For me, I have found that restoring from an old backup and then jailbreaking can be problematic. I'd rather restore as new, jailbreak and then restore from my backup to get my stuff back.
