Saw the thread about the 11" iPad Pro... buy the current model now or wait? Does the same reasoning apply to the 12.9" model or are there different issues?

I have an original 12.9" iPad Pro from a few years ago that I use for teaching and reviewing articles. In the last six months, I've noticed that the writing and tracking of the Apple Pencil is no longer as accurate. In some apps (Notability) I get random lines appearing as soon as I touch the pencil to the screen. In other apps (Goodnotes), the edges are no longer as sensitive. I don't know if I can recover the sensitivity of the screen, or if things are starting to deteriorate. I use it regularly for writing on, so I assume it's slowly wearing out.

So, BestBuy was discounting iPads by $150 Cdn for the holidays, and I picked up a new 12.9" (yes, I know that doesn't seem like a fantastic sale on a $1300 machine, but things don't seem to go on sale as much in Canada). I also picked up a case - I almost never use any device without some sort of protective case.

And then I just read about some significant improvements slated for the iPad Pros. I *can* wait a bit as I'll need the iPad Pro intensively again in May for my new teaching cycle.

However, I haven't been following iPad rumours and reviews much since I've been generally happy with my iPad Pro, so I'm not sure what's on the horizon. Any advice?

Did you try replacing the Apple Pencil tip? They're available for $19 for a 4-pack.

Mind, if you're happy with the 2018 Pro and don't think you'll regret not waiting, then by all means just keep it.

Even if a new Pro gets released in spring, it'll probably be a while before those get discounted.

I did indeed. It made a difference in the actual writing, but not with the errors I noted above.

I should note another error. Sometimes, the screen just "freezes". I cannot trigger any response using pen or finger. One solution that works - mostly - is that I wipe off the screen with a tissue. I'm figuring there's a building of dust or oil on the surface as I'm using it. It's not a great solution however as this tends to happen in the middle of a lecture. However, this problem is again more recent.

I just thought of something... is it maybe Goodnotes? That's my main program for lecturing. I'm using an older version. Are older versions incompatible with the latest iOS updates?

Nobody knows. The new device will be better, but we don't know to what degree. I'm hoping for a large jump since there wasn't one released for 2018. At the worst it can be an 'S' style upgrade or completely new screen. I doubt the body will change though.

Well, they both come out at the same time. Both the 11" and 12.9" model... this is the first time Apple did it this way. And most likely they will continue this process.

If you currently happy with your iPad Pro, then wait it out until the Spring. Most likely it's a March Event announcement. I had the 1st generation iPad Pro and I was happy with it, but the hype of the ProMotion display grabbed my attention, so I upgraded to the 2nd generation iPad Pro.

Rumours are that it will have time of flight cameras for augmented reality. Probably a13 as well. If that doesn’t interest you then by all means keep your current pro.

Thanks for the input. Maybe I'll try resetting my iPad Pro one more time, and if that addresses the issues temporarily, I could hold off until the spring.

i have freeze screen problems ofte. I found that if you tap the home button, then hit the application toop it again, works to unfreeze the screen, annoying, but it works. I have a second renewed iPad that had the light bleed problem and am thinking of returning this one to Apple store for replacement. I did contact support to note the problem within the 90 day warranty period. Now, 60 days more and its is not any better.

U should check out the bend ipad thread in this forum, it persuaded me from upgrading til Apple do something about it

Thanks. I almost always use a case and I'm not particularly rough with my gear, but my iPad goes through a fair amount of use. Material robustness would be a prime consideration in my case.

Thanks. Unfortunately, doing that doesn't really help me: in the middle of lecturing and writing notes for students, I can't be hitting the home button and restarting the app multiple times.

Your 1st gen was the one having issues with the screen being unresponsive? Sounds like the very common “touch disease”. There are several threads about that in this forum. Though it seems to be more common in the newer gens.

Thanks everybody. I just ended up returning the iPadPro. I figured it would be worth waiting since I do not need my iPad extensively over the next few months.
