It's tough to find information on my vintage 2G these days.

I have an unlocked and jailbroken iPhone 2G running FW 2.01 (I used the pwnage application)

How do I go about updating to 3.0? I did some research. Some threads said that Apple had stopped trying to unlock the 2G iPhones and if you were running FW 2.2.1 you could do an update within iTunes without breaking the unlock.

My phone is running 2.01. I can't find a straight answer on upgrading and unlocking to 3.0. Do I update to 2.2.1 first, then jailbreak/unlock and finally do an iTunes update? Problem is I use itunes 8.2

I do have pWnage 3.0, both the BL.bin files and the 3.0 FW. Should I go ahead and upgrade and unlock using the old method .. building the custom ipsw and then right clicking in iTunes ...

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm more than a little confused right now

Should be as simple as plugging in, upgrading, then using PwnageTool or Quickpwn to unlock again.

Sounds like you have all the tools you need. Go ahead and try it out. If you have trouble come back. I'm sure there'll be someone around to help.

Update to 3.0 via iTunes or first generate the custom ipsw file using Pwnage 3.0?

The consequence of trying it out is a bricked iPhone if I do it wrong :)

I'll wait a few hours to see if anyone pipes in and if not, I'll give it a shot ...

Believe me when I say it is impossible to brick your iPhone.

After restoring to 3.0, you're going to use pwnagetool to unlock and activate your phone.

Did you do the unlocking you have now or did you buy it that way?

Just hit update in iTunes. Don't restore then update. Just click update. Once your phone is unlocked, it stays unlocked. Right now, my phone is unlocked running stock 3.0 firmware. If you want to remain jailbroken, then you have to make a new firmware bundle in PwnageTool.

I did it myself. Actually, I've been doing it myself for all the updates since July '07.

justin ... I've read 2 conflicting instructions which is why I want to be careful. I'm running 2.01 (NOT 2.2). The instructions I saw said that 2.2 updated via iTunes stays unlocked. Not sure about 2.01 and if I have to first update and unlock to 2.2 before getting to 3.0

First off, let me say that you can not "brick" your phone. You can almost always do a DFU restore back to whatever firmware you like. I do this myself. I have been unlocked since 2.0. It works fine.

If you're 2g is unlocked using bootneuter(which i'm assuming it is), upgrade to 3.0 and just jailbreak again. bootneuter flashes the baseband at a hardware level so no matter what firmware you upgrade to the phone will stay unlocked.

Unless of course apple releases a firmware which updates the 1st gen's baseband which would be a dick move

This is the best answer for you unlocking questions eVolcre. :)

As for upgrading the firmware here's what I would do as it's minimal work imo. Download the 3.0 firmware and use Pwnage to repackage a Custom Firmware. Then put in DFU mode and restore teh Custom Firmware to the device. There shoudl be no need to update to a stock firmware then have to upgrade to a Pwned firmware, or upgrading to stock firmware and using Redsnow after. Why not just update directly to a Pwned firmware? :)

As impulse462 stated, your 2G phone should not have to be unlocked once BootNeuter does it's thing, 2G firmware updates to not flash your baseband. onlt the updates for the 3G and 3GS do this.

Hope this helps a bit!

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm going to go ahead and do this today and will post back with the results.

Last question, because this would really make my life even easier. Do I even need to jailbreak to keep the phone unlocked? I don't install outside apps or springboard. All I want is an unlocked phone.

If I upgrade to 3.0 through iTunes and then skip the jailbreak portion, am I good to go?

The reason for all these questions is that I'm temporarily in the States at the moment and using an ATT SIM. I won't know if the unlock worked until I return to my station and use my foreign SIM. I'd rather not have to deal with this in the field.

Cheers and thanks again ...

I am 95% sure you don't have to jailbreak again once you've used bootneuter to unlock the 2g.

Hi. i recently did this. I don't know why everyone says update through iTunes. I have a 2G on Vodafone. IT DOESN'T WORK. Itunes now must have some new security thing because it won't let you even start the restore after DFU unless it's got a "legitimate" sim in. (I tried this with one of my parent's "legit" iPhone O2 sims and it still didn't work because my i bought the phone from US and was an ATT customer for 2 years and then threw out the sim when i moved back) phew... long explanation sorry if it doesn't make any sense.

I downloaded 3.0 through iTunes. (plug in your iphone and before it can do anything it will ask if you want to download, or download and install)

Then i downloaded redsnow 7.2 (i think there's a newer version which should work fine) and just pointed to the iTunes IPSW for 3.0 and voila.

There is a problem that you'll encounter - the newest firmware from itunes is 3.0.1 which you can't use with redsnow. I'd find the 3.0 IPSW somewhere else online perhaps from apple.com?

Hope that helps,

M
