Upgrade cpu for macpro 2009

I have the mac pro 2009 model 4.1 with 1 x cpu xeon w3520. I need to update my CPU to a more powerful. I updated the efi 4.1 to the efi 5.1. Will or will not work the CPU core i7 980x on my mac pro? If "yes" so with ecc or non-ecc ddr3 ram need for work?

Yes, a 980X would technically work with a 5,1 firmware flash, but it may not display the proper CPU ID (doesn't really matter anyway). But if you use a 980X, you'll need to switch out to non-ECC memory. i7s don't support ECC at all.

However, W3680s (Xeon equivalent) are priced somewhat identically to 980Xs (around $600), so why not just get the Xeon and keep your existing memory?

I installed the 980x in my mac pro, but model processor is displayed as an "unknown" How to make a processor is displayed as xeon?

I suspect you already know this, but the W series Xeon's can not be configured into a dual setup. If you get the dual cpu card it requires X series Xeon's. The W's are sold at a lower cost, which is why Apple uses them for the single cpu configurations. So, you would need to buy 2 (X series) cpu's, not an additional W.

W or X prefix doesn't point to dual cpu setup.

but Xeon series (3xxx for UP, 5xxx for DP) number will tell u.

Are you have stability issue? I interest on putting i7 980x in my 2009 pro too

This optimal update for mac pro 4.1 with one-socket motherboard. i7-990x has 3,43 GHz, but his price ~ 1100$ vs 3.33 Ghz 980x with price = 600$.

I installed mac os lion instead of mac os leopard so cpu as displayed good!

980x is reality work!!!! Please see screenshot! Ram is exchange to the non ecc 16gb, because not work on the 980x!!!!!! Geekbench result is very good!!!!



980x faster vs 8-core xeon 2,93!!!!!

The tests geekbench on the Internet, my upgraded mac pro of faster on 1260 points, the maximum of mc561 2400 MHz (8 cores) and closer to the Mac Pro 2660 MHz (8 cores), losing his 460 points, which is understandable, for the simple arithmetic, 3333 * 6 / 8 = 2500 + ~ 100 MHz due to the fact that all nuclei in the 6-core processor on a single processor, rather than two as in the 8 core, so the communication between cores faster. That is 6 cores of 3.33 8 cores are similar to 2600, which explains the slight lag of 8 core 2660 and a significant advance 8 core 2400.
