I want to upgrade my mac pro 2009 - 2.66Ghz 8Cores Dual CPU's to 12 Cores W3680 xeon,

My Question is, Can I put Two CPU's W3680 xeon pair in 2009 or 2010??

How I know which processor number is support for mac pro?

I think my question is clear

I would recommend doing much more research on this subject so that you have a better understanding about what is involved and what processors are compatible. FYI the processor you chose will not work for what you are wanting to do. You will find out what processors are compatible during your research.

For dual CPU configurations you are required to use the X5680s. Same CPU essentially but for dual proc systems and supports more RAM.

The Xeon Westmere that can work on your 2009 8 core dual cpu are X5670, X5675, X5680 or X5690. The X5650 will also work though since your current cpu is 2.66ghz 8 core, on certain tasks there won't be noticeable speed gains if you upgrade to the X5650 2.66ghz 12 core.

Intel's Part Number Descriptions Explained here:

Intel has changed what the leading Alpha means. The change happened when going from the 35XX (55XX) to the 36XX (56XX) series.

In the older series it meant:

E = Enterprise and CPUs with a TDP of 80 Watts
X = Accelerated and CPUs with a TDP of 95 Watts
W = Workstation and CPUs with a TDP of 130 Watts

and in every case the leading numeric after the alpha meant:

3 = for single CPU use only (1 x I/O Bus)
5 = for dual CPU use, but will work in single CPU applications (2 x I/O Bus)

the the later series, the above nomenclature rules stayed constant EXCEPT - The "X" prefix means accelerated (95 or 130 watt TDP) and is only used on CPUs with a 2 x I/O bus. The "W" prefix is now used only in the single CPU series (1 X I/O Bus).

In any case in both series, the meaning of leading numeric after the alpha has remained the same. A "3" for CPUs with a 1 x I/O bus and a "5" for CPUs with a 2 X I/O Bus.

I hope this makes sense to you. It took me awhile to figure it out.

It's a good time now to upgrade your CPU as the prices of Xeons have gone down plus you have many options to choose from. You can do the upgrade yourself to save on money or you can hire an experienced guy to do the upgrade for you and they offer some kind of warranty.

Lastly, avoid the youtube video by Dontae Harris about CPU upgrade for the 2009 Mac Pro. It's not accurate and there are details left out. Just do some more research and reading before doing the upgrade.

I just want to say that I just had box185 remove the heat spreaders on my pair X5680s and everything went smoothly. He even returned the heat spreaders to me which I was not expecting. I highly recommend this service over trying to do a hack install with the IHS attached to the process.
