i am looking to upgrade my imac 9,1 running snow leopard 10.6.8 to the latest operating system possible. The current HD is failing and i was wondering, if I was to replace the HD and RAM, what is the closest I can get to the latest operating system

You can get the specs on your iMac from everymac, apparently it is an "early 2009".


If you scroll down, you'll see that the newest version of MacOS that it supports it El Capitan


I would really think twice about spending any money to upgrade such an old computer. A system that old may not have much life left in it, and opening it up to mess with the inside could cause other problems unless you know what you're doing.

My parents also own a 9,1 but a 24 inch model with a better GPU and it's currently running Catalina with dosdude1's patcher. I have tried Monterey on it before but I would advise against installing it. It doesn't run as well as Catalina. If you're gonna upgrade the RAM, 8gb will be the max and I would recommend that.

Pop in an SSD and it'll run pretty well, despite what the first reply says. But still, keep in mind that it is a 13 year old computer and it will not be a speed demon! ;)
