Hi,

I have Yosemite running on a spare mac. I downloaded El Capitan GM Candidate Apple from link Apple emailed me.

Can I do a normal upgrade (not clean install) from Yosemite to El Capitan GM Candidate?

And when El Capitan final is released can I upgrade (not clean install) to the final version from El Capitan GM Candidate?

Thanks.

Yes & Yes.

The upgrade is done using the downloaded file from the app store and following the prompts (no usb drives needed).

I myself upgraded from latest public release of OS X Yosemite to El Capitan GM Candidate with no problems. There might be a strong case to be made that this might just end up being the build that is released to the public on Sept. 30 although in the last two versions of OS X the GM candidate was subsequently updated, once for Mavericks and twice for Yosemite, after the original candidate. Regardless when the public build is released you can install it on top of this current one if you so wish. It's really up to you how comfortable you feel running a potentially beta operating system. I prefer to test drive it now so that if I find any annoying bugs I can report them before it goes live. Mind you I backup my Mac religiously every day using Time Machine and that is without using my computer for anything important, just browsing the web, checking e-mail and media management. Hardly a important case scenario where failure of the system and downtime would affect me personally or my income since I can do much of it on my iPhone.
